THN.com Blog: Throw a very heavy book at Simon

Chris Simon has three points and 51 penalty minutes this season.

At this point, the only thing left to say about Chris Simon is this: For the love of all that is good about this game, Colin Campbell, “Marty McSorley” the heck out of him.

By that, I don’t mean swing a stick at Simon’s unsuspecting head. Instead, I mean suspend him long enough that his on-ice career never again resumes. Make it so this last contribution (highlight) to his playing legacy is one that’s a fitting example of the heinous acts he has intermittently unleashed on unsuspecting opponents over the course of his time in the NHL.

In other words, throw the book at him – and once you’re done, pick up the book, cut off the corners so they’re extra sharp, and throw it at him again.

And please, spare me the “Chris Simon does a lot of good things for people” business. I’m sure deep down in his misunderstood, peace-loving soul he’s anything but Satan incarnate and would love to buy the world a Coke. But that doesn’t excuse the latest in a long line of outrageous acts; acts that in almost any other sport would’ve secured him a lifetime ban a long time ago.

If there is anything positive to take away from Simon’s latest assault, it’s the fact that it comes at a time where the “drop the instigator rule” talk is making a surge in popularity. One of the central tenets of the anti-instigatorites is that, left to their own devices, NHLers will clean up a game that has lacked personal responsibility ever since the league decided to remove their god-given right to employ cartoonish violence in the name of winning hockey games.

Well, here’s your benevolent policeman. Here’s your tough guy with a heart of gold. Here’s one of the true guardians of the game, someone who only has the best interests of his fellow players in mind.

Simon does not deserve the privilege of playing in the best hockey league on the planet, and hasn’t for some time now. He has disgraced the league, his buddy Ted Nolan, the New York Islanders, and the game itself for too many years, and will continue to enter into a state of “temporary insanity” for as long as he is permitted to.

I hate sounding like Susan Powter, but someone needs to stop the insanity.

Adam, I agree with you fully. The NHL screwed up with Todd Bertuzzi that it does not have full credibility. The league needs to put the players safety as a priority.

Attempting to injure someone is NEVER acceptable, but to pull a stunt like this with 5 minutes left in a one goal game is completely mindless. Not only did his actions add another layer of tarnish to the league, he effectively ended his teams chance of winning the game. Chris Simon is an incredibly selfish and shortsighted player. I don't know if the league plans any further punishment- though I certainly hope so- but if I ran the Islanders it would be "So long, Chris!"

Disgraceful to the game let alone his team and the league they play in. I thought after the Ryan Hollweg slashing he should have earned no less than a life long suspension. He ought not ever wear a sweater with any logo on it again.

Too many suspensions and he still didn't learn his lesson. I feel criminal charges should be made and I think he should be banned fron the Nhl., for good.

I know Chris Simon has had issues or maybe he continues to have issues but if Ted Nolan can't get through to him, it should be game over. He's crossed a line and his actions are no longer NHL matters but criminal now. As for the Marty McSorley/Donald Brashear incident, I still maintain that Brashear's injuries (concussion) were the result of his embellishing the fact that McSorley lightly tapped his stick on the side of his helmet to egg him into a fight. Had Brashear not slipped and cracked his noggin on the ice, I don't think the incident would still be viewed as a barbaric attack in the Simon/Bertuzzi mold. I'm in no way defending McSorley but it was quite clear that he didn't use brute force swinging his stick at Brashear's head - again merely a tap to get his attention. I don't feel it warranted criminal charges and what basically was a banishment from the NHL. Chris Simon and Todd Bertuzzi both deserve banishment.

When I was a kid playing hockey on the streets of Wawa Ont., Chris Simon would cruise around town and all the kids thought he was the greatest. To see him pulling this latest stunt back then would have made me want to chase him down and cut off his long hair. Don't feel bad for the Simon either, he's got a beautiful log house on Lake Superior that would make anyone jealous. If he keeps going on this road, we'll have to take down the sign in front of town saying 'Home of NHLer Chris Simon'. That sign, and the lack of economic activity are probably the reason no one lives in Wawa anymore.

I'm a life long Isles fan, but this guys should go. Not only does he take dumb penalties and look to hurt others, but he costs the Isles more games than he has ever helped them in. Adios Simon!
