The Hockey News Logo Rankings Central

Zoom Image

It’s the image that brings a city together and sets it apart from everywhere else. When players say they’re playing for what’s on the front of the jersey, not the back, this is what they are speaking of. The colors, mascots and traditions collide in an emblem forever emblazoned on flags, hats and hoodies – until some genius in marketing decides to go for a more youthful demographic, that is.

Welcome to The Hockey News' Ultimate Logo Rankings and Tournament.

Over the course of the next two months, we will first lay out our rankings of every notable league in North America, then let you vote on your favorites.

From your league votes, a tournament will be spawned. An event which will pit 40 teams from every league against each other, regardless of home attendance, winning record or prominence.

Below you will find links to our league rankings and below that links to each stage of the tournament.

Enjoy...

WSHL is a joke compared to the EJHL and AJHL. Plus they are at the same level as the OPJHL and they weren't even in this tournament so why should the worst USA teir III junior A league be in it. And that valencia flyers logo is awful just like that league.

What the heck are the motor city mechanics???

Clifford Zang (Posted 2008-08-27 15:58:39)
The Motor City Mechanics were supposed to return last season. I'm doubting that they will be here this season as well.

eric foreman (Posted 2008-08-26 23:15:33)
I think you should do the WSHL, or (the western states hockey league) next because the Valencia flyers have a way tight logo

My choice for best overall logo is within a league that also has no mention. For any one interested, that league is the NAHL. Some of the logo's currently used in this league easily float on pro level waters. My vote for best overall logo goes to...the Mahoning Valley Phantoms! Exceptional art work, excellent color choices, superior overall design!! To me, the best there is yet!

Patrick (Posted 2008-08-25 07:48:39)
Does anybody now what happened with the Motor City Mechanics? Do they return for 2008-09 or not?

Mike (Posted 2008-08-25 01:01:17)
I think you should rate the CIAU next...GO THUNDERWOLVES!

Eric B (Posted 2008-08-23 23:48:24)
I agree. CIS Hockey logos should be ranked. Looking forward to watching Nipissing compete in the OUA circuit in 2009-10. I haven't seen a game before, so how does CIS compare to major junior or US college?

Hey i know old school is cool but for some of us who are just getting to really like hockey i must say that I really like the Wild jersey. Its got cool colors and its unique. I also really like the Islander jersey they used only for a while, it had better colors, and i would have to say, that i wish some team would switch to the Nordiques old colors, they looked cool on ice, how about it Columbus!

Flyerfan52 (Posted 2008-08-18 15:53:33)
The Lady Liberty logo is great. The Wild's double image is excellent. I didn't like it at first until I saw the second image. Very creative! I still like the Phantoms logo. It reminds me of two Flyer logos that are mirror images. It also looks mean. Look at the eyes.

Terence Cahill (Posted 2008-08-15 16:11:53)
Great forum but I think it would be even better if you included a beer league section. Let me know what you think and I'll send our logo.

John Gallo (Posted 2008-08-10 10:05:54)
Go Hawks. I mean, original 6 team, with the design that is easy to draw and looks perfect on everything, that inspires so many different emotions and values while looking badass at the same time...no contest

Shawn (Posted 2008-08-07 20:20:50)
just wondering.. but are third jerseys going to be available? Someone had mentioned the Rangers Liberty Logo and while not their main logo, i'm still pretty sure lady liberty could still beat some other NHL teams.. just a thought

Daniel Brian Crotteau (Posted 2008-08-06 15:49:08)
How in the world did the Buffalo Sabres get left out!!!!!!! I'm appalled that the Sabres aren't even mentioned. I have a the Sabres jersey and it is one of the best designed jersey's in the world!! Shame on you all !!!! Sincerely, Daniel

Scott Hayes (Posted 2008-08-06 15:19:42)
Too bad jerseys aren't included w/the logo, but few are better than the AHL Rochester Americans (at least for Americans!). Born in the 50's when Rochester was Montreal's farm team (Canadians - Americans), the logo and jersey (especially the road blue) combine for the perfect hockey "sweater"

Craig (Posted 2008-08-06 13:31:35)
Yes! something else my Canucks can lose! it's great to be a 'Nucks fan, it really is.

jay em ache (Posted 2008-08-06 13:14:58)
I agree Daniel.... WITH THE WILD!!!THE MORE YOU LOOK AT IT THE COOLER IT IS. also like the Thrashers.

Bo! (Posted 2008-08-06 12:13:23)
Best ECHL Logo: Erie Panthers... currently known as the Victoria Salmon Kings

Daniel Estabrooks (Posted 2008-08-04 13:47:53)
I think the Minnesota Wild's logo is possibly the best in all of sports, much less hockey. It's attractive, and it's a very clever and well-done double image.

Tyler Sorochan (Posted 2008-08-03 20:36:11)
I agree, why not rank the Canadian Universities? The U of Alberta Golden Bears have a sweet logo. Besides, that hockey is better than some of the no-name leagues who are on the list.

t-murder (Posted 2008-08-03 16:34:01)
Being a life long FLyers fan who despises the Rangers I still have to agree the Lady Liberty logo is one of best ever

Cavscout (Posted 2008-08-02 16:36:27)
While I'm all for anything hockey that gets me through the long summer - as others have pointed out this has been done. And done better at: http://icethetics.blogspot.com I do like the inclusion of the other leagues, however. But I don't like that THN has limited our choices right off the bat. Ronn Roxx is right.

Nick Eman (Posted 2008-08-02 15:11:35)
Brian Kemp, Lady Liberty logo: Nice one! Nothing against the current Rangers logo, I like it too but the Lady Liberty is superb, one of my all-time favourites!

Ronn Roxx (Posted 2008-08-01 20:00:34)
Wow... of my top 5 NHL logos, only 1 made it into their top 10. Why don't they let us vote for our favorite NHL logo, instead of the best of the ones they like? Makes voting kind of a waste of time if I can't pick my favorite.

John McIntyre (Posted 2008-08-01 12:11:18)
Of all the leagues listed, why not the CIS University Hockey in Canada?

Davey (Posted 2008-08-01 12:05:11)
This is sooo done. NHLTOL or Icethetics as it's called now did this last year. Whats with the big guy ripping off the little guy here? http://icethetics.blogspot.com/

Jason W. Robertson (Posted 2008-08-01 12:00:49)
It's an interesting idea, but didn't we already have this last year? I seem to recall a blog set up specifically for the occasion.

Graham (Posted 2008-08-01 11:41:42)
wow, slim pickings for the categories. Most of the options for the NHL are the weakest logos

Kyle (Posted 2008-08-01 11:37:55)
Why does the SPHL and IHL get two bids why the various collegiate associations and the USHL get only one each? Seems a little odd to me.

Chris (Posted 2008-08-01 11:25:29)
Just curious... why can't we have a ballot for all of the logos? Maybe there is one beyond the eight you have listed that fans like more than what has been chosen for us.

Brian Kemp (Posted 2008-08-01 11:11:30)
I voted for the Wings (I'm biased), but if the option was there for the Lady Liberty NY Rangers jersey, I'd probably vote for it. Not only is it one of the nicest looking jerseys in all of pro sports, no other image is more identifiable with a place like the Statue of Liberty is with New York. I think there might be a law on the books that requires her to be shown in any show, movie or article about NYC, much like the Sydney Opera House must be shown whenever talking about Sydney, Australia, or the Eiffel tower in Paris.
