THN.com's NHL Logo Rankings

The Chicago Blackhawks top our list as having the NHL's best logo.

Zoom Image

The Chicago Blackhawks top our list as having the NHL's best logo.

Naturally, the NHL was the most contested of our ultimate logo debate, but there were certain emblems we knew would crack the top 10.

The first four, you’ll notice, are Original Six franchises, but we didn’t want to trade entirely on sentiment, which is why newer teams such as Minnesota and San Jose were rewarded for their unique design.

The most important distinction is that we are judging logos, not jerseys. This is why the New York Rangers fell out of the top 10; when you think of the Blueshirts, you think of the diagonal lettering on their jerseys before you think of the crest. Teams that have improved their looks in recent times were rewarded (ie. Phoenix), while those who took a step back in our opinion (Ottawa, Buffalo) were punished.

The ‘H’ in the ‘C’ is legendary.
4
Boston
Bruins
The most imitated logo in all of hockey.
5
St. Louis
Blues
Bluenote so classic, it stands by itself.
6
Philadelphia
Flyers
Flying ‘P’ is an automatic.
7
Minnesota
Wild
Leaders of the new school.
8
San Jose
Sharks
Tweaked their original instant classic without losing what worked.
9
Pittsburgh
Penguins
Set the standard for animals with sticks.
10
Toronto
Maple Leafs
Simple, clean, known immediately throughout hockey.
11
New York
Islanders
Solid all around, plus bonus points for the outline of Long Island.
12
Calgary
Flames
Tough to argue with the flaming ‘C.’
13
Phoenix
Coyotes
Rising from the worst logo of all-time, the new coyote is clean, simple and refreshing.
14
Nashville
Predators
Those are some serious fangs. Remnants of an ancient sabertooth tiger were found in downtown Nashville a few years ago, hence the mascot.
15
Edmonton
Oilers
A drop of oil is the only art, but Edmonton gets points for a nice font.
16
New York
Rangers
If this was a jersey contest, the Blueshirts would be much higher, but it’s not.
17
Vancouver
Canucks
Still trying to find their iconic Canadian logo, Canucks are sporting a nice compromise.
18
Florida
Panthers
As far as realistic logos go, this is a pretty solid panther.
19
Colorado
Avalanche
Much like New Jersey, it’s fairly right-on-the-nose; it’s an Avalanche coming down an ‘A.’
20
New Jersey
Devils
This one dropped a lot in our meeting, but the stylized ‘N’ does have some good features.
21
Atlanta
Thrashers
This one made a big move up in our meeting; the thrasher is the state bird.
22
Washington
Capitals
Love the uniform, love the secondary eagle logo, but we need more than words for the primary.
23
Dallas
Stars
It’s a big star and it says ‘Stars.’
24
Columbus
Blue Jackets
A marked improvement from the original ‘cribbage board’ design.
25

Los Angeles
Kings

Call us when you go back to either of your first two logos.
26
Ottawa
Senators
The original senator was much better than his current 3-D cousin.
27
Tampa Bay
Lightning
Bolts are great, but Tampa still hasn’t found a font that works.
28
Buffalo
Sabres
When your own fans hate it, how are we supposed to disagree?
29
Carolina
Hurricanes
One THN staffer said it looked like a toilet flushing. Ironically, the Canes have a great secondary logo with the flags.
30
Anaheim
Ducks
It’s barely a logo; more like a font. Not that the Mighty Ducks were any better.

Over the next two months, THN.com will leave the voting on the best logos up to you, the reader. To vote for your favorite, click HERE.

No question about it. The Chicago BlackHawks not only have the best NHL logo, but the best in all of sport! David Maye..number one Hawk fan!!!

montreal worst pens best

bob waters (Posted 2008-09-20 12:00:23)
yes isles over rangers the rangers logo rots the isles screams of 1972 thats just stupid what is a nyranger anyway texas ranger makes sense[last place isles we need that 1st pick] hope we dont give it awawy go devils

Scotty (Posted 2008-09-08 22:24:21)
This list is really accurate, although I prefer the old B's logo. Blackhawks are definitely tops, and the old Canucks logo was awesome. As a Sabres fan, I am a little disappointed though. I was really hoping to see the banana slug last so they may change it. Ugh, such a heinous logo. And the bias toward traditional logos is because they are just better, not because they hate "the South." End your pity party already.

Sean (Posted 2008-09-08 13:12:54)
Isles over Rangers? The Isles logo is too busy (yes I am a Ranger fan), where as the Rangers is crisp, concise, and everyone can recognize it, even if you took out the text. The Isles logo still screams "1972" (although it is MUCH better than the Gorton's Fisherman. I enjoyed laughing at those monstrosities). I agree the Devils should be higher on the list, it is a cool logo incorporating the "n" and "j" (Although I hate them almost as much as the Isles), and Dallas should be higher up, too. It has a star, and says "Stars", isn't that what logos are for? I think it's cool to incorporate the point of the Star into the "A" in "Stars".

Michelle Reynoso (Posted 2008-09-08 11:35:53)
So who cares if the Ducks have the worse logo...if you turn it on its side (with the D on top) and it looks like the STANLEY CUP!!! The year we made the new logo, that's exactly what we won!! Woot! Woot!

Minny (Posted 2008-09-08 04:25:52)
RE: Dave Rivait we'd love to have the North Stars back, you twat! Bring back the Lakers while you're at it. Some people see real poetry with the New Wild logo. It's ok-- abstract like the name-- which actually does have a ring to it after you say 5,000 times. Nothing's cooler than the North Stars though-- on every level. Dallas? Hockey in Dallas? What's next? Hockey in AZ? FL? NC? TN?

Keith Primeau (Posted 2008-09-07 00:31:05)
I'm a Flyers fan, but I have to say that your rating for the Devils is far too low. The stylzied 'N' is actually really cool. It's a symbol for hatred all around the tri-state region.

Luke Bruss (Posted 2008-08-28 20:52:37)
I love the classic Bleu Blanc et Rouge of the Canadiens; but they're a close second to the original Skating Penguin with scarf of the 60's and 70's Pittsburgh Penguins. And as a Penguin fan of course I have to mention that the flying "P" of the flyers is undoubtedl LAST! Let's go Pens!

B Walters (Posted 2008-08-25 15:52:17)
I don't know why the Canadians are ranked so high. Their logo is dull and if there are two universally overused colors, it is red and white. I like the Wild's logo because it shows imagination. I also can't understand why it seems that all but a few people hate the Sharks logo. I think that not only is it one of the most instantly recognizable logos in sports, it shows that someone put some actual thought into making it.

Chris Ford (Posted 2008-08-20 13:32:23)
I think the NJ logo should rank a little higher because it is in fact an N, J, and D...virtually timeless and very clever. The Preds logo is ranked way too high...it's not their fault...the team name itself is the problem...if they were the Nashville Sabretooths, it would make sense...but, a general word like Predator, which can apply to mosquitoes seeking a human, does not necessarily imply a futuristic long-toothed cat.

Shaun Hopkins (Posted 2008-08-13 19:48:19)
I have always loved the NEW YORK ISLANDERS logo. The Blue & Orange color scheme is the best in the NHL. If I had to pick a second favourite logo, I would have to go with the Blackhawks. I've loved their sweater since I was a kid, and I'm glad they haven't deviated from the original logo over the years.

Zach (Posted 2008-08-13 15:28:59)
The Devils logo represents not only the N and J, but it represents one of the most famous legends which in my mind ranks up there with Big Foot, and the Lochness Monster.

Tyler (Posted 2008-08-12 12:18:26)
John very good point, people do get worked up over supposedly racist team names even though there is nothing racist about them. But FYI Seminole refers to a Native American tribe that lived in Florida therefore the team would be included in your group of teams people get upset about and not your group that people don't care about

Doug (Posted 2008-08-11 23:01:16)
I have to say that, even as a fan of the Penguins, I've always hated their current logo and felt that the last one was better. Of course, I never saw what was so wrong with the "Gordon Fisherman" Islander; I don't think much of their current (and past) logo, either. I still feel the best logo award goes to the North Stars (Nordiques would be up there too). Among current teams, the Sabres should go back to something like their buffalo with crossed sabres; I like the return to the color scheme though. I also think the Oilers' logo looks pretty dated. But before we get too tough on the current NHL logos, let's all think back to the early '80s Canucks giant chevron and be thankful for what we have!

scott purdie (Posted 2008-08-11 11:02:34)
minnesota, before you run your mouth......

scott purdie (Posted 2008-08-11 11:00:29)
"I wish the Stars could use the old North Stars logo. That was classic" Ed W, think before you type...........the "N' in the stars logo represented "north", where missensota is.......hmmmmm where is dallas? oh yeah, nowhere near the north. your pretty smart though......

Geoff Rode (Posted 2008-08-10 22:54:59)
The Islanders logo is crap, otherwise pretty much agree--I notice the original six are well represented among the leaders so maybe nostalgia plays a part in the rankings?

John (Posted 2008-08-10 17:11:52)
There are lots of sports teams named after people or groups of people. I will boldly predict that if no sports teams were named after Indians or native americans, many people would consider THAT to be racist. If such were the case and an owner decided to rename his team and call them the “Indians” since no other team had been so named, nobody would object and people would probably say: “It’s about time.” ...................................................................................................... How come people only get worked up about certain team names related to Native Americans, but not all team names which are related to people, or groups of people, including the following: Canucks, Senators, Yankees, Pirates, Mariners, Rangers, Brewers, Raiders, Cowboys, Packers, Patriots, Celtics, Fighing Irish, Trojans, Seminoles, etc.

Dave (Posted 2008-08-10 10:45:23)
Now you see, I like the more traditional logos....I did die laughing at the comment that stated the canes' logo looked like a toilet flushing. Jackets and Calgary could have been higher on the list, but then again I am a lil partial.

Clay (Posted 2008-08-10 07:20:57)
You know when you really assess them, outside of about 9 of them, collectively they're pretty weak and boring actually. Probably the worst of all the leagues really. And I agree with the Leafs moving closer to the bottom, it's very boring (real creative there, ya!!). Could just imagine that ground breaking brainstorming session of genius they had to invent it...."Ah let's see the Toronto Maple Leafs, ok how about a Leaf, yes that's a great idea...Ok now what do you say we print the Toronto Maple Leafs in it, wow what an idea, ingenious it is"........Ya come on, just because of tradition, that has nothing to do with Aesthetically pleasing.

Larry (Posted 2008-08-09 16:01:22)
The Blackhawk logo is not racist except to the uninformed who do not understand history. Chief Blackhawk was an Indian war chief who opposed ceding Indian lands and led warriors in fights against white settlers in Illinois and Wisconsin, he also joined the British in the War of 1812 against the United States. Most of his late years were lived in captivity of the United States government. He is recognized as a great leader of his people who heroically opposed the theft of Indian lands. His courage, integrity and dignity is well recognized, and many schools, sports teams, roads and other things have been named in his honor. There is a beautiful statue of Chief Blackhawk in Oregon, Illinois, that was erected in 1910. Go Blackhawks!

Myke A. (Posted 2008-08-09 02:23:38)
yep... the Blackhawks sure do have the best logo in the NHL, and i think that they also have the best logo in all of sports... AND the maple leafs logo should be a lot lower down the list. i know their a original six team and all, but that doesn't change the fact that their logo is just a stupid blue leaf that says the team name in the middle. that logo is worse than the mighty ducks logohttp://thehockeynews.com/imgs/design/btn_form_submit.gif Submit

Britt L. (Posted 2008-08-08 23:57:48)
You guys do realize that the Devils have an N and a J in that logo, right? You guys called it a stylized N, but it's actually the J that has the horns and tail.

DavidF (Posted 2008-08-08 22:53:45)
I'm from outside of Rochester, NY and a huge Sabres fan (screw the Panthers affiliation with our Amerks). WE HATE THE BUFFA_SLUG!!!! It's obvious that those jerks at RBK got control of design choices. I'm not saying the "goathead" was that great, but the old crossed sabres on blue was by far the best!!!

Robert (Posted 2008-08-08 13:47:20)
As a Canucks fan, I've been suffering under that embarrassingly bad logo for many years now, so it's discouraging when an "authority" gives them any kind of encouragement at all. "Nice compromise", indeed. That's just the problem -- all compromise and no style. Many fans in Vancouver wear the oldest Canuck logo to this day, but of course management will never accede to their wishes. The encumbered C belongs at the bottom of the list, along with the Buffalo slug -- there's another team which didn't know what it had. As for the predator, you fellows must really like fangs.

CARMELO (Posted 2008-08-08 11:40:25)
YEP....GO HAWKS

johnny villeneuve (Posted 2008-08-07 19:02:28)
I'm pretty much in agreement with the list. I'd make a few changes but not that it would matter much. Most of the team logos are cool, except for a few. Why did they have to put a hockey stick in the logos of Atlanta and San Jose? Like the fans don't know they're hockey teams? And the racist remarks about the Black Hawks. Give yer heads a shake. There is nothing racist there. It's done with respect to its namesake. The Hawks' logo is the greatest in all of sport, bar none, not to mention the uniform itself. They haven't made a caricature of it like the logos of the Cleveland Indians or the Atlanta Braves. It is iconic, it is colorful and its definitely a head-turner! As mentioned previously, RED RISING!

Qaz (Posted 2008-08-07 12:37:02)
The Sens have a side logo of the new logo, but they haven't used it yet. It doesn't have those ugly 3 spikes like the old side logo.

chris d (Posted 2008-08-07 11:14:12)
now that i look at it, carolina's logo DOES look like a toilet flushing

blackjack (Posted 2008-08-06 12:52:50) re: Hamilton. Havoc is about the most ECHL-sounding proposed name I've ever heard. worse than Mighty Ducks, Blue Jackets, and Thrashers combined I AGREE HAVOC IS A TERRIBLE NAME, I HATE ANY CONCEPTUAL TEAM NICKNAMES THAT SOUND LIKE A WNBA TEAM OR ARENA FOOTBALL TEAM"THE DREAM" "THE FURY" "THE FORCE"ETC ETC." NON TANGIBLE WHATEVER. HOW THE HECK DO YOU MAKE A MASCOT OUT OF THAT???? THE THRASHERS" AT FIRST LISTEN SOUND LIKE ONE OF THESE(POSSIBLY A TEAM THAT GIVES ANOTHER A THRASHING??? TOTALLY STUPID) BUT UNLESS YOU LIVE IN GEORGIA, MOST PEOPLE DONT REALIZE IT IS A BIRD. THE STATE BIRD AS WELL, WHICH THEN MAKES IT AN ACCEPTABLE NICKNAME IN MY BOOK

Shawn (Posted 2008-08-07 07:49:32)
Islanders and Coyotes logos are given way too much credit. Sure the Islanders may be "most improved" after the Gordon Fishsticks debacle but it's still not too ingenius.

onenut (Posted 2008-08-07 03:38:54)
Im a CANUCK fan but their logos have always SUCKED except 2. The lumberjack and stick in the rink. If the Aquilinis can get back to one of these I would be their biggest fans! The Orca is crap, just as bad as the skate going downhilll.....like the canucks!

silvio p (Posted 2008-08-06 23:18:21)
The pittsburgh penguins have the best logo. I don't even think the rest compare or compete. It is by far the coolest logo, and the colors are second to none. I will agree that Montreal, Chicago, and Detroit are original, and legendary, but the question is the best logo and I will end with saying the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Travi (Posted 2008-08-06 22:51:59)
The Hartford Whalers still have the best logo of all time

flo (Posted 2008-08-06 21:38:27)
have to disagree about the sens logo. the first one was boring. when the 3rd jersey came out, the sideways senator was facical and made me wonder who was in charge of marketing. but now with it's modern almost soviet cubist look to it, i'd say it look much more fierce. apart from the logo, have you looked at the jerseys, the colours are amazing! let,s just hope the team can do the same. now just sign Vermette for more then 4 years so i can get a jersey without having to change it sooner.

jay em ache (Posted 2008-08-06 21:02:19)
Someone mentioned earlier about "if the Hurricanes logo looked like a flushing toilet, then the Canuks logo looks like a toilet seat" very funny!!! I had a great marketing idea based on this statement, and had already drawn up a blueprint to make myself millions off the hockey fans of Vancuver. However I could only imagine the lawsuits that would be filed because of the dorsal fin......LOOK OUT!!!!!

Jeff Miller (Posted 2008-08-06 16:41:02)
"Mark the Russian guy" also forgot the "T" in MonTreal.

Jeff Miller (Posted 2008-08-06 16:26:39)
I don't understand why the 'make-believes' logo is in the top 10. there's NOTHING about it that makes people say "that's a cool logo". It looks like it was designed by a 6 year old. Points for pity, I guess....here's to another 41 years!!

Alex (Posted 2008-08-06 15:13:39)
As a correction to Matthew and others who think the "H" in the Canadiens logo stands for Habitants or Habs..it is actually for "Hockey" as the full official name of the team is Le Club de Hockey Canadien. Calling the team the "Habs" started long after the "H" was in the logo but it would be cool if they kept it there because of the popularity of the nickname which I think is a great story by itself....for another day.

unknown (Posted 2008-08-06 15:03:37)
I was surprised that no one likes the Canuck traditional orca - I think it's very Canadian and should be way higher on the list!

Alex (Posted 2008-08-06 14:18:06)
I like the list but it's hard to start rating a skating Penguin over a Sabertooth tiger. Regardless, the classic logos of Mtl and Detroit are the best in my opinion. Philly can probably get up into the top 3 too even if they weren't the original 6. Their log is recognizable immediately. Gretzky helped make the Oilers logo a classic. Chicago may need some updating to avoid the racial image so I'm surprised it made it right to the top. Also, I'm sure if you put out this image alone, people would not identify the Black Hawks right away. I do like the improved Coyotes logo from that god-awful Picasso mess from years back. Canucks, Capitals, Blue Jackets, Carolina, and Ducks need something new now...and fast. Who's with me??

Matthew (Posted 2008-08-06 14:17:59)
Jay, The jerseys in general are horrible. However, there are some that are nice and, though they didn't do it correctly to begin, it's nice to see some advancement in the way of helping the players. As far as Reebok goes, they are not a "hockey" name, but they did buy out KOHO and JOFA, so the credentials for Reebok are solidified from their acquisitions (which still act almost independently under the Reebok title). I don't think you'll be seeing the old style anytime soon, but expect some sort of further development down the road for jerseys and uniforms.

Brian S. (Posted 2008-08-06 13:01:08)
Gary: the Kings' original logo was inspired by the logo for Real Madrid, only because the owner liked the looks of that classic style crown. it has nothing to do with the fact that California was once part of Spain or Corona Beer, however :)

blackjack (Posted 2008-08-06 12:52:50)
re: Hamilton. Havoc is about the most ECHL-sounding proposed name I've ever heard. worse than Mighty Ducks, Blue Jackets, and Thrashers combined

jay em ache (Posted 2008-08-06 12:42:40)
I love this concept of ranking hockey logos!!I love the Minnesota Wild and Atlanta Thrashers the best. Unfortunately, no mater what your favorite NHL logo is, they all suffer by being put on those STUPID REEBOK RBK EDGE CRAP JERSEYS!!! They remind me of bad MOTO-CROSS of BMX outfits. BRING BACK THE OLD STYLE JERSEYS TO PUT OUR BELOVED LOGOS ON!!!!! RBK has no business being in hockey,no more than I want KRAFT EXXON or PANASONIC making them. thanks for letting me rant. I will only buy pre RBK jerseys for my collection. I hope Rbk goes away, or at least does not infect ahl or echl jerseys.

Brian S. (Posted 2008-08-06 12:35:41)
definitely agree with the people say Carolina should swap their primary and secondary logos (like the Kings did). that tidybowl would make a nice shoulder patch

Brian S. (Posted 2008-08-06 12:34:27)
if anyone wondered what Mark the russian guy said, it was 1. Mtl 2. Tor 3. Pitt 4. Det 5. Phi. since I wasted my time translating figured I might as well share

Matthew (Posted 2008-08-06 12:25:16)
@Koho, I understand your point and, to a degree, agree. However, the Montreal logo does have something to do with the city and the team. Canadians (team: Canadiens), particularly Montreal inhabitants were referred to as Les habitants, forgive me if I spelled incorrectly. The fact that the "H" is in the logo and Habs is the Canadiens nickname is no accident. It is subtle and, for the less informed, mysterious, which that only adds to its allure and should put it high on the list. Now, let it be known, I am not a Canadian, nor a fan of the Canadiens.

Pat Shmitty (Posted 2008-08-06 11:33:19)
I disagree, the old Mighty Ducks were the greatest team/logo/movie ever. I still call them the Mighty Ducks cuz I'm cool that way.

Mike (Posted 2008-08-06 11:18:53)
How is the Sabres logo deemed horrible by so many people. I am a proud leafs fan so I am not being biased. I can agree with the *canes logo ranking. The leafs logo should be (and is) rated higher than that of the Canadiens but neither should be rated so high. How were these logo s even judged? Artistic or History?

Adam Hutter (Posted 2008-08-06 11:11:54)
The Islanders should be in the last half at best but more like close to the bottom. I understand that this is a league contest, but the Islanders Logo has been the laughing stock of the New York Area for years, and unless they revamp it totally, they will continue to be the Joke of the NY area, no matter what your poll says. The only redeeming quality of this logo is that is is better than the old Gortons Fishreman Logo. Remember that one? How about a list of the worst logos in NHL history ??

Ben (Posted 2008-08-06 11:02:03)
im 12 and i luv thn ... and thier site... the logo survey rocks too ... ide have to say the Wilds logos the best cuz its like 2 logos in one and it looks great on the jersey and hats and stuff ... :) .. keep up the poles! and i luv ur newsletter!

ben (Posted 2008-08-06 10:58:55)
I LUV THE SURVEYS!!! the logo ones r cool im 12 and i luv hockey news and thier website!!!! wild logo is the best...its like 2 logogs in 1 :)

momomags (Posted 2008-08-06 10:25:40)
The Habs best logo for sure because of their history. It;s the most recongnized logo in the world, like the New York Yankees logo. 'nuff said.

Dave Rivait (Posted 2008-08-06 04:12:13)
These things are designed to make everyone fight. Of course nobody will ever agree on whats the best anything. These guys have it mostly right..The Original 6 have the best..cuz..well..that other guys said it..they have history. I remember why I like hockey in the first place..it was the 1972-73 OPee-Chee hockey card series..the wacky colours..the news Islanders logo..the first expansion had just happened recently. St. Louis, Philly and Pittsburgh added great new logos. I personally love the Rangers crest, even though it isnt used on their uniforms.. But heres MY take..(of COURSE its not the same as yours..its just designed to infuriate you!) TOP LOGOS 1. Chicago (best uniform in all sport..) 2. Boston (Esposito is GOD) 3. Toronto (prefer the old style..but what can you do?) 4. Detroit (all they do is win) 5. Montreal (Les Glorieux!) 6. Rangers. 7. Philly 8. Pittsburgh (remember their first FAT penguin?) 9. St. Louis (poor Noel Picard) 10. Islanders 11. Oilers (hate the franchise..good logo) 12. Sharks (preferred their first jersey..very WHA feel to it) SO-SO Vancouver..anything is better than yellow stripes..but go back to the TV set permanently and you go to the top end. Panthers..Feh, but its so hard to keep track of all these penny-ante teams. Ottawa..Feh..Roman Senators didnt wear helmets did they?..Anyway..I like the idea.. Caps...kinda 1974 retro.. Kings?..same as The Couv..go back to Purple and Gold..Rogie Vachon! Canes..I like the colours, but the logo could use a re-tooling. BOTTOM RUNG the rest are just a series of Johnny-Come-Lately logos which try to capture the same spirit of the bygone days of our sport..which are quite dead and gone...(Thanks Bettman..hurry up and quit) Sorry, Minnesota Wild?..ridiculous name..crappy colour scheme...stupid logo..too artsy...why not go back the The North Stars? Predators/Columbus/Atlanta?..excrement...shouldnt have teams OR Logos. Flames/Devils/Stars/Lightning?..Boring. Coyotes?..Why do you losers have a hockey team?..anything associated with Wimp Gretzky cannot be good.) Ducks..again..why is there hockey here?..oh yeah..Thanks Gary Buffalo..sorry guys..one day you will get it right. Avalanche..Did you guys make that up on a napkin before the meeting?..another stupid name but at least a decent team for a time. OLD TIMERS Seals..gad.. Whalers..better when it had a harpoon through the whale..then got PC and was punished by being sent down south. KC Scouts..i liked that one..it was nice.. Barons...feh Jets...decent Nordiques...what was that? an igloo? North Stars...again..better than "The Wild" ugh. Atlanta...it was a nice touch when Calgary made their alternate captains wear the old Atlanta flaming A..

G ary (Posted 2008-08-06 03:17:43)
Looking at number 25, the Los Angeles Kings, It suggests to go back to the first two. I guess that means the favorite is the "Corona Real Espanola" If any of you do not know what I am expressing, just look at what the Royal Crown of Spain looks like, then look at the original logo crown of the Los Angeles Kings. Also, look at the logo crown of "Club Futbol de Real Madird" Of Course, California did at one time belonged to Spain.

Jeremy (Posted 2008-08-06 00:57:17)
It's unfortunate that the Carolina franchise went from one of the best logos of all time (Hartford Whalers) to the junk they use now. Milwaukee Brewers have to have the best logo in all of sports. The first time I saw the M and B forming a baseball glove catching a ball my mind was completely blown.

Louis (Posted 2008-08-06 00:17:47)
I agree about the NJ logo, Rob. The only other logo I can think of that would've topped the Devils' would be the old Buffalo Sabres logo, which was just that - a buffalo and two sabres.

Rob: Id say the Islanders have done a good job of that, as well... representing their state, two counties, and even the exact town that they are from right there in their logo. They also make it clear that its about hockey, you couldnt use that logo for any other sport- many other NHL logos dont say "hockey" unless you already know they are hockey. But please know, I like the Devils logo... I disagree that it should be so low and Id put it in my top ten looks-wise, personally.

Rob (Posted 2008-08-05 20:38:34)
Please answer this: What other team has a logo that represents the state or city and its iconic team as well as the devils? No one has come up with something more clever and more representative than the stylized "N" and "J" with subtle devil horns and a tail all in one logo. Most teams have one letter like that represent the team name, not both the team name and the city/state, such as MTL, COL, Van, etc...Not saying its the best logo, but its obviously way underrated here.

Koho (Posted 2008-08-05 19:58:57)
The current senator belongs in a Saturday morning cartoon? lol that must be one high budget cartoon because look at the detail of spongebob... thats on par with the original senator. Now look at the 3D one... thats way above the blackhawks with its more accurate detail.

Koho (Posted 2008-08-05 19:54:35)
wow every argument against me was completely biased with traditionalism, any artistic representation arguments? no, because everything I said destroyed the history behind every logo with their horrible logo with the example that if any new expansion team debuted in the nhl today with any of those logos (canadians, bruins, blackhawks, maple leafs) would be laughed at like the ducks. why? because their history is gone. for exaple if these logos debuted today. B in a wheel: what? that's a bruin? C with an H inside: I didn't know that's what canadians looked like. Native American: if its named after one chief then why are they the blackhawkS (making them plural, therefore referring to a group of them) leaf: a team with a grammatical error in the name and logo wtf? they all make me lol and you too without their history... don't deny it its completely true. Traditionalism is overrated.

Matt (Posted 2008-08-05 17:21:16)
Well said, Craig. As for logos, being a Pens fan, I have to put them in the top three. I am, however, willing to admit that the Blackhawks logo should be 1 and 2 should go to the Bruins, they are just gold standards that are used everywhere in sports anymore. Amazing the fluidity those two logos possess. If this were a jersey contest, Blackhawks would still be 1 with Pens taking second.

Craig (Posted 2008-08-05 15:13:29)
For Elteez, and anybody else who has a problem with Chicago's logo (an image of a classic Native American, and not an "Indian" as you ironically refer to it as), I am curious as to how it is any different than using a Senator, a Ranger, a Canadien, or from the AHL, an American, an Admiral, a Riverman, a Pirate or a Monarch. Now besides the Canadien's and American's, the rest are more like occupations, but they are also ways of life, and if you think using a classic Native American warrior as a mascot (and they are the Blackhawks, not the Indians) is offensive, then your just trying too hard. Do modern day Senators dress in armour and wear plummed hats? Should Portland be berated by pirates for using them as a mascot? You need to stop being offended so easily. Racism is a massive problem in our world today, and it is made much worse when overzealous people such as yourself trivialize it. On a lighter note, Sharks have the best logo. Devils and Avs, while they are simplistic, they are also bland, while Boston, Detroit and Philly manage to take that simplicity and make it interesting and sharp. And I definitely don't see everybody's problem with the Sabres new logo. I really didn't like their middle design, I'm glad they went back to the classic colours and a new dynamic buffalo, though the original one would have been awesome to see instead.

John Jackson (Posted 2008-08-05 11:42:06)
New Jersey should be in the top 5. Canucks should be at the bottom

John Cusumano (Posted 2008-08-05 11:05:35)
Devils and Avalanche are in my top 5. They are by far the most classic logo as far as expansion era teams go.

TMC (Posted 2008-08-05 10:27:12)
F84: I didnt say it was a problem or that I didnt like it- I agree with you and think its fine. I simply pointed out that the logo is not an outline of Long Island as was stated in the THN logo review. It is instead an outline of Nassau and Suffolk counties, two of the four counties on Long Island. Many people do not realize that when they look at the logo- I myself didnt realize it for a long time. And I am aware of the reasoning for it, but the fact remains that Kings and Queens can consider themselves anything they want, politically... georgraphically they are still part of Long Island and no amount of politics will change that.

Rick (Posted 2008-08-05 08:00:36)
Wings and Hawks def. top two...

mark marcus (Posted 2008-08-05 04:13:02)
Perspective aside, isnt the Panthers panther freakishly disproportionate(favoring his upper body at the gym). The Capitals should use the hockey stick for the L not the T(duh), and "on the nose" for the Avs could be "in the nose"(looks like a line w/ a little bump at the top).Basically anything flying, or an animal playing hockey looks good to me.

Gordon (Posted 2008-08-05 03:55:17)
NJ in the top five for sure.

F84 (Posted 2008-08-04 23:31:02)
TMC- The Isles logo does in fact represent Long Island. Brooklyn and Queens decided to consider themselves boroughs of New York City. So I have no problem that they're not on the logo.

Louis (Posted 2008-08-04 22:51:27)
The Canucks' logo should be ranked much lower than it is. Their return to blue and green was a good move, but that whale logo looks even worse now. There's less colour in it, and it looks washed out.

Louis (Posted 2008-08-04 22:42:13)
The Senators' current logo is a definite step backwards. Ottawa should bring back the original logo used when the team re-entered the league in '92. The top of the two "t"s in "Ottawa" formed the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill. It was a simple, good-looking logo. But the federal government whined about it, saying it was disrespectful. The club eventually changed the logo, but the feds, in all their wisdom, missed a golden opportunity to promote the Capital of Canada and give Ottawa a little pr...

TMC (Posted 2008-08-04 22:24:01)
"New York: Islanders Solid all around, plus bonus points for the outline of Long Island." Nice to see, I love the Islanders logo and Id appreciate its distinct look even if I wasnt a fan. But, just to let you know: Its not an outline of Long Island there on the logo, its an outline of Nassau and Suffolk counties... that a large part of Long Island, but Queens and Brooklyn are not included. (I hope the Isles dont lose their bonus points lol) BTW, the top of the "I" in Islanders also points to the precise location of their arena in Uniondale- which I think is one of the coolest and least-realized things about the logo.

TMC (Posted 2008-08-04 22:18:24)
Carolina logo practically at the bottom? Thats surprising to me. I think that is a very cool looking logo.

Michael (Posted 2008-08-04 21:12:46)
If the Canes logo looks like a flushing toilet, then the Habs logo looks like a toilet seat. The logo is actually fairly accurate to what a hurricane looks like. i agree that the shoulder logo does look better. Luckily, thats what will be on the black alt. jerseys :)

John (Posted 2008-08-04 21:07:02)
Why did buffalo use a banana slug as a mascot???

Joventino (Posted 2008-08-04 21:05:17)
I guess the motto here is less is more because a lot of the logos on the top 15 are very basic and... classic E-mail me when someone from our generation makes the list, not someone from way back when who is more attached to classic logos than the contemporary ones

Louis (Posted 2008-08-04 19:50:00)
Mmm I know the original 6 are kind of untouchable, but I always thought the Hawks logo was overrated. The Habs logo is ordinary as well as the Leafs one. The Rangers logo is horrible (beside the great colors). The Yotes have a cool logo, as well as the Wild, Avs and Pens. Still can't believe the Flames is rate so high???

Felix MacLean (Posted 2008-08-04 18:43:36)
I don't mean to be p.c., but I'm more than a little surprised about the selection of a logo that is pretty widely considered racist. (I know, that was not the intention of the logo.) And though I'm not the fan of the Avs as a team, I do think they have one of the more aesthetically pleasing logos in the NHL.

Pat (Posted 2008-08-04 18:35:12)
> It's already been done, sir. And if it was done honestly, I would have to think it's pretty cool that someone admires my race enough to depict it as a mascot designed to instill courage and pride in one team, and fear in the opposition.

Kevin Clark (Posted 2008-08-04 17:46:16)
You do realize the Devils logo is an "N" and a "J" combined, right? How you have anything ranked below the Predators is beyond me!

Claire (Posted 2008-08-04 17:05:05)
I doubt that anyone criticizing the Minnesota logo realizes that it is actually a pictogram. That the elements that make up the animal head represent elements of Minnesota, the North Star/Northern lights, the stream/river, evergreens (which by the way, stay standing no matter which way the pictogram is turned), and a sun/moon. It was an incredibly well-thought out logo, fierce without being frightning, and is animalistic without being identifiable as one specific creature. For a modern logo it does very well, and the third jersey crest (now the home sweater) is a great tribute to the traditions of hockey and well deserving of one of the best-selling sweaters in the league.

even if i 'm not much of an islanders fan..i have to say they have the best logo out of any NHL team...just the ny with the y shaping out to be a hockey stick with long island under neath is classic..that logo should never go out of style....the worst are pretty much of a tie..the carolina hurricanes logo of a black, white and red mess!??!the tampa bay lighting with just a lighting rod?!?!those two have to be the most pathetic logos in the history of sports.........

billso (Posted 2008-08-04 16:28:10)
You ranked the Devils at number 20? And the Leafs' accursed "modern" logo was ranked higher? Shame on you.

Elteez (Posted 2008-08-04 16:17:29)
I agree with your assesment of the Chicago Blackhawks logo - it is Proud, traditional and iconic, it is also very, very racist. I have not seen an indian dress this way in public since the village people stopped being relevant in the 70's... but seriously, It is Ironic indeed (and not cool) that we still cling to remnants of our rascist past where select human beings (what is the fetish with Indians?) are still treated as MASCOTS. I do not wish to bash the good people at THN or the NHL (The leaders in the NHL have done far more to drive away fans themselves than I could ever do even if I cared to try.) I wish I could tell you that I have the answer to solve the problem of blind intolerance and bigotry in our society without alienating yet another market segment, I don't, although I have lived long enough to see that on occasion, society can change it's views when enough people realize that it is just plain wrong to demean people and make money off it too. It is my fondest hope that we can get past this foolishness... so that we could all work together and come up with a passable logo for the Buffalo Sabres - honestly...what were they thinkin? Geez!

WingZERO (Posted 2008-08-04 15:38:14)
Say what you can about the Buffalo Sabres logo, but didn't they say that the new Buffalo Sabres merchandise were the top items sold on the shopNHL.com website for like 2 years running? Oh yeah, love the Hurricanes comment. I never thought of it that way before.

James Lindsay (Posted 2008-08-04 14:04:37)
The St. Louis Blues logo is hands down the best in hockey. I am glad it is ranked as high as it is by Hockey News. That symbol alone just embodies ice flying off the skates as the Blues swoop down for the goal....

chris (Posted 2008-08-04 12:41:15)
The Bruins logo was based on Ralph Waldo Emerson's description of Boston as the "Hub of the Universe." The B stands for Boston and the spokes are roads leading to Boston. If you look at a map of Boston, you can see that 93, 95, and 90 follow some of the spokes.

mikael, man there are a lot of stupid things posted on these blogs ( some even from yours truly ) but man that one took the whole 7 layer wedding cake!!! Philly and St.Louis in the original 6. I am at a loss for words, which is a rare occurrence indeed! Most ( definitely not all ! ) people who post anything on these sites tend to have a clue about what they write. Come back when you get ONE!!!!!!!

Yes. its obviously more fun to talk about the worst logos than the best. I come to the conclusion that Anaheim, Buffalo and the Kings are the 3 worst. while sabres and ducks are really laughable i get really nothing out of kings logo. Its eh, i dont know. It does not look lika a crown, the colours really boring. the only one able to be a contender among the Org6 is philly. if you compare them with the blues(one ahead) Flyers logo says -IN YOUR FACE! while the blues says like "do you prefer simon and garfunkel to the carpenters?"

Sheree Wisinger (Posted 2008-08-03 20:00:43)
I agree with most of the rankings except for the Wild, preds, Coyotes and Hurricanes, they should be at the bottom. I love the Blue Jackets new logo with our very distinctive pennant flag wrapped around a star which denotes we are the capital of Ohio. It is a vast improvement over the old CBJ logo.

Jeff (Posted 2008-08-03 17:50:24)
The reason the Bruins logo is a "B" inside a wheel is that Boston is known as "The Hub" (of New England, I guess).

John Frank (Posted 2008-08-03 17:05:13)
If the Blackhawks logo is racist, then the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is worse. A charicture of a stereotypical angry Irish man is more insulting than a depiction of a proud and noble native American. I also see a lot of aboriginal Canadians wearing Chicago gear all the time.

Razzle-Dazzle (Posted 2008-08-03 17:01:46)
koho, first off there shouldn't even be a team in carolina. Second, they moved the team from Hartford, a team with one of the most original logos all time and turned it into that hideous thing. Ya, there's not enough red and white in the NHL already?(that goes for you to phoenix !) real original! Oh yeah and ask the people in montreal what the *C* & *H* has to do with canada or the city, after 100 years and the history with only VERY minor changes ( I know they changed a little ) to the logo, it means more to some then there national flag!!! Somehow I don't think thats the case in carolina .

IceRaider63 (Posted 2008-08-03 16:54:32)
Andy ... see Matt Welko's excellent explaination of the Blackhawks logo ... And let's stop all this rubbish about racinst logos. If the local Illinois native population were upset with it then they would have brought legal action by now. ... As for the list, well yes, the classic simple logos have stood the test of time, both in the original 6 and also with a strong number of first expansion franchises. The idea of a logo is to represent both the city and the product on offer (hockey). Some are doin this better than others. Minnesota 9for anyone who has ever lived or visited there, is right on the nail and beautifully done. Sabres have got it very wrong, as it's one of the worst logos in sports history. Any team that can't come up with a LOGO and has to defaul to writing its city or team name should be ashamed. This is not the world of college sport, this is corporate branding and needs careful and studied ideas to bring it all together. Saying that, trends and styles move on and logos can too if there is a major shake-up within an organisation. ... I was not a fan of the alternate jerseys (Colorados was the poorest effort), but it was an oportunity to try new things. The Oilers' alternate was strong, bold and well done. My list comments : Ducks, Sabres, Panthers, Capitals, Islanders and Penguins should be at the bottom, Canes, Sens, Thrashers and Avs should be much higher. Good poll, good discussion point .. if only people would keep their team biases to themselves and look at it from purely the logo point of view. By the way, I like the Canucks orca, but hate that they have had to write Vancouver across the top of it last year. If you have to explain the logo to people, or identify it, then it's not doing it's job. ... Best logo in sport has to be the Calgary Roughnecks. Love it. ... for more sports logos check out http://www.logoserver.com/Hockey.html

Anthony (Posted 2008-08-03 16:45:43)
Josh, with regards to the Montreal Canadiens logo, many people think that the 'H' is for 'Habitants'. However, the logo is actually a red 'C', inside a white 'C', and a white 'H' inside. The 3 letters, 'CHC', refer to 'Club de Hockey Canadien' or Canadian Hockey Club in english.

Andy (Posted 2008-08-03 14:11:37)
Btw: Isn't the Blackhawks one a bit strange? Imagine having a logo of a white man, and a team called "the Whiteys". I don't think people would be as ok with that as they are when the logo depicts indians. For me it's on the verge of being racist.

Randall Buschmann (Posted 2008-08-03 12:02:56)
most of these rankings make no sense. NYR at 16? Should be higher. VAN and that awful orca whale should be 30. TB at 27 with font issues? makes no sense. Nice try though.

Josh, you've got some facts wrong. First, the original Ottawa Senators started playing in 1883, prior to baseball's Washington Senators in 1891. They won 11 Stanley Cups, and have a history, even if it is now just an expansion team with the same name. Sure, they weren't around for almost 60 years, but the DC Sens haven't been around since '71. Secondly, the "H" in the Habs logo does not stand for "Habitants", it's part of the full team name, "Club de Hockey Canadiens". As much as I hate them, you've gotta respect the history--plus the graphic design. Also, I hate the 3D Sens logo. Looks like a Saturday morning cartoon character.

Dillon Allie (Posted 2008-08-02 22:42:05)
7 and 8 are a complete joke. Anything that looks like an Arena Football League or WNBA logo shouldn't even have been included. I'm not a Rangers fan, but Original 6 first. And Dallas at 23? Give me a break. Much better than "The Wild" (insert WNBA or MLS reference here), Nashville, or Phoenix.

Josh (Posted 2008-08-02 22:40:39)
Koho, yes there seems to be "old-fashioned" bias, but I don't think its directly because the teams are older. The older logos are what you think of when the your hear the team name, with these new teams who change logos every other year you have nothing to associate with them. Second just because the logo doesn't correlate with the first thing you think of when you hear the cities name doesn't mean its not a good logo because personally when I hear senators I think of Washington not Ottawa, now that might be because I'm American, not Canadian, then again Washington's team is a much older franchise then this new Senators franchise. When I hear hurricanes I think of Florida not Carolina. If you did know why the team chose the logo it would make sense and that is why these teams are known for their logos. Chicago has been explained as for the Canadiens last time I checked that what people from Canada were referred to as and what letter does that start with - "C' - that makes sense to me. The "H" is there for the team's nickname "les habitants" which refers to the French settlers who settled in no other than what is modern day French Canada or you guessed it Montreal (Quebec).

T S (Posted 2008-08-02 22:21:47)
Just couple things to think about in regards to the Blackhawk logo. It has always been treated with RESPECT. Unlike Chief Wahoo, the Hawks have never used cartoon characterizations of stereotypes to market the team. Unlike the Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins, or the Fighting Illini you don't find us doing things like the tomahawk chop or having a guy in an indian costume running around doing pretend rain dances to excite fans. Our mascot is actually an oversized bird. As was said earlier it is specific, Chief Blackhawk was from the wisconsin, illinois area, not some generic term for indians as a whole. He was considered a noble warrior and thats how the logo has always been treated by the organization, which is vastly different from how other organizations have handled themselves.

Koho (Posted 2008-08-02 22:21:01)
Ok the best logo represents both the city and the team name with reasonable artistic ability. Now this list is completely based on traditionalism making it biased. Here is what I see wrong with some overrated/underrated logos. Bruins: B in a wheel, represents Boston with a B, how does it represent a bruin? it doesn't. Blackhawks: its and indian. Related to chicago how? Canadians: C with an H in it... what does that have to do with people from canada and montreal for that matter. Senators: look at the original senator, then the 3d one. How can you honestly say that a flat face with a terribly drawn 2d helmet is better than that 3d masterpiece. Hurricanes: a flushing toilet? wtf ever hear of the Coriolis effect, thats why they look alike.

Keith (Posted 2008-08-02 21:43:17)
Now now Jerry, lets be realistic here if anyone is an idiot it would be you. These things are NHL logos used for marketing - not works of art that belong in a museum. Most of them look like crap and THN did a great job ranking them. When someone sees a Winged wheel you automatically think hockey team, when you see a 3D senator you think 'hey theres one of those bisexual warriors from Sparta, Greece.'

jbhuber (Posted 2008-08-02 20:57:02)
I think that the best logos are the ones that little kids can draw on their notebooks, fat guys can paint on their chests, and are instantly recognizable. I agree with many below that NJ needs to be much higher for that reason.

Here is some free education on the Hawks logo... The Chicago Black Hawks joined the NHL in 1926 as part of the league's successful foray into United States-based teams. They were founded by coffee tycoon Frederic McLaughlin. Most of the Hawks' original players came from the Portland Rosebuds of the Western Canada Hockey League, which had folded the previous season. McLaughlin had been a commander with the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division during World War I. This Division was nicknamed the "Blackhawk Division", after a Native American of the Sauk nation, Chief Black Hawk, who was a prominent figure in the history of Illinois. McLaughlin evidently named the hockey team in honour of the military unit.

Ian (Posted 2008-08-02 15:38:12)
Picking the Blackhawks first without even mentioning the constant debate over Native-Americans-As-Sports-Mascots is embarrassing. Imagine the uproar if a baseball publication picked Chief Yahoo at number one, or the NFL picked "Redskins" as best team name. You may like the way it looks more than any other logo, but to ignore the fact that many people would be embarrassed or outrage that the thing even exists is to exhibit amateur journalism. Just to clarify: I'm not saying this means you shouldn't pick it as number one, but you gotta say SOMETHING.

Nick Eman (Posted 2008-08-02 15:06:36)

"The original senator was much better than his current 3-D cousin." HA! Did you mean to sat "The he original senator was a joke compared to his current 3-D cousin." That 3D logo is awsome.

Koho (Posted 2008-08-02 14:35:09)
What does history have to do with anything about how good a logo looks. This list is all based on traditionalism and nothing about artistic representation of both the city and team. Its flawed and completely biased. The list is terrible and completely wrong.

Steve Bauer (Posted 2008-08-02 13:18:03)

Ha ha Mike, funny I did not even see your comment on the Devils' logo before I wrote my comments. :)

Nick Eman (Posted 2008-08-02 13:09:01)
In my opinion: The Islander logo is considered classic because they were a dynasty at one time, otherwise the logo is just too busy. Devils should be higher, crisp, clean and classic. One can clearly recognize what it is from a distance and promoting your team is one of the main reasons for having a logo. One of the tests of a logo's true effectiveness is how easily a casual fan recognizes the logo from a distance. I.e. Dallas Cowboys (extremely simple logo but it rings out Cowboys, without even saying Cowboys, quite loudly). Canucks too high. Push the Vancouver "C" and ocean identity all you want it, but to me the logo stinks of coporate inspired (from the old Orca Bay). The whole Canuck logo history disgusts me actually (Kings too but not as much), not because of the logos themselves, just because of the constant changes, I mean they have been through what, 4 different logos in 30 years? There is a lot of good to be said for keeping the same clean and simple logo for like 90 years.

The Devils logo deserves to be much higher. It's simple, looks cool, and is instantly recognizable.

buster brown (Posted 2008-08-02 11:28:53)
other then having the whole top 10 wrong, its a semi accurate list...lol

Mikey (Posted 2008-08-02 09:30:16)
Too bad they didn't use the Oiler's alternate logo, I think that one is one of the coolest in sports

Steve (Posted 2008-08-02 00:42:15)
I'm actually not an idiot, but I would be if I paid money to see the Islanders play. I'm a Flames fan and could care less about teams in the Atlantic Division but I just happen to think the NYI logo is one of the ugliest in the NHL. I don't care how long its been around, its ugly in pretty much every way, they only thing I like about it is thats in the shape of a circle.

Geoff Dean (Posted 2008-08-02 00:28:02)
Good list for the most part. Turf the flames, canucks and the wild to the curb (has nothing to do with the oilers being in their division, im a leafs fan). You could shove the sharks and penguins down a bit, and that predator mess. Id move the devils and rangers up. Thats about it.

Jimmy (Posted 2008-08-02 00:22:46)
Steve you are an idiot. The Islanders logo is a classic, and is easily top ten. It is obvious you are a Ranger fannie.

Steve (Posted 2008-08-02 00:12:47)
Pretty decent rankings but I would change it to: 1. Detriot 2. Chicago 3. Boston 4. Philadelphia 5. Montreal 6. St. Louis 7. Toronto 8. Edmonton 9. New Jersey 10. New York Rangers 11. Calgary 12. Buffalo 13. Minnesota 14. San Jose 15. Pittsburgh 16. Dallas 17. Vancouver 18. Washington 19. Los Angeles 20. Tampa Bay 21. Carolina 22. Columbus 23. Nashville 24. Atlanta 25. Phoenix 26. Ottawa 27. Florida 28. New York Islanders 29. Colorado 30. Anahiem

Mike Smith (Posted 2008-08-01 22:11:12)
haha thomas ur an idiot in the nhlblogspot poll Blues came in as second only to the canadiens, so i'd say that people maybe like the blues a bit....

matt hartman (Posted 2008-08-01 21:47:03)
um, the hurricanes should not be second to last. their logo is clearly better than montreal (sure its classic, but come in, its a c with an h inside.) or toronto (...its a leaf.) it may not be as good as others, but second to last?? come on!

Matt (Posted 2008-08-01 21:13:52)
I have to agree that Detriot, Boston and Chicago all have great logos. But I think Minnesota, NYI, Phoenix, Nashville are way too high and Buffalo is a little bit too low. Plus I don't see what all the fuss about Pittsburgh and San Jose is, yes, not bad, good for middle of the pact, but not top 10 worthy.

Tim (Posted 2008-08-01 20:51:34)
Chris, go hug a tree and get over it. There's nothing racist about it, there's nothing 'borderline' about it. In fact most native americans love the logo. It's a classic, and they should be proud. The Blackhawks indian head is well done and easily the best looking logo in all of hockey.

Jon (Posted 2008-08-01 20:47:06)
Gotta agree with the Hurricanes logo, the shoulder patch is pretty good looking but the jersey crest is horrible, they should switch them around. Also I thought Anaheim's old third jersey was better looking than their standard jersey. The black one with just the old school lettering on it. Oh and the Ducks logo is right where it should be, it's awful, the font the colors...yuck! On the other hand the Kings and the Senators I think are better then you give them credit for.

bob (Posted 2008-08-01 18:43:07)
LIKED THE OLD MAPLE LEAF....

Craig Nolan (Posted 2008-08-01 18:38:17)
What a joke. The Ducks have the worst logo? They at least deserve to be in the top 20. The Panthers and the Coyotes logos are so much more ugly.

Brian S. (Posted 2008-08-01 18:28:04)
Stars (becoming a classic and ranks about the same as the Kings in my eye) and Capitals (although only words) are both better than Panthers. why that one ranked where it did on your list, I'll never know. Caps is also a good example of how to update an old, decent logo - Isles can do the same. though I expect they'll make the eagle much more prominent soon. 3rd jersey will possibly even take over as their main.

AvsFan62 (Posted 2008-08-01 18:23:29)
I think the avs logo is one of the best. HIGHLY disagree with your list.

Brian S. (Posted 2008-08-01 17:51:39)
you guys missed the mark by a lot with most of these. Kings, vastly underrated. view it full size on a white jersey it stands out as brilliant. definitely better than most. Avalanche, old and outdated and cartoonish. terrible colors. Blues, boring, needs updating. Isles, could use a minor refresh. Canucks, TERRIBLE corporate sleaze. Thrasher, ugly. BJ's, not particularly good, I can never figure out that swoosh. Buffalo, yeah time to kiss that thing goodbye. Carolina Tidy Bowl, how about something a little more realistic? also it's called a "typeface" or "wordmark". A "font" is something you play with in Microsoft Word.

Chris (Posted 2008-08-01 17:42:55)
seriously, they chose a borderline racist logo as the best in the nhl?

Travis K (Posted 2008-08-01 16:31:13)
I think the predators logo and blackhawks logo are great. you ask for creativity and originality in a logo and those are neatly designed and original. how the bruins logo is up there considering about 50 teams in the world use it i don't know. its way to simple and can go with any letter. i personally like the sabres jerseys but the logo could be better. leafs should be at the bottom, easiest logo ever made. you know its bad when i can draw it perfectly.

Erik (Posted 2008-08-01 16:10:51)
I think to many people on here are looking at this list by the teams and not by the logos. I like the flames, islanders, rangers, and maple leafs to be further down since a 5 year old can come up with those ideas. I like to see something in a logo that is creative. Many people on here are complaining because of hockey towns rather than the overall creativity.

Trent McCrory (Posted 2008-08-01 16:07:51)
I would ahve to agree with the rankings. Iv always loved the Blackhawks Logo, maybe the best in all of sports. Islanders might be to high, they should lose points for worst one ever(fisherman). Id love to see a full jersey rankings. Id Expect it to go Detroit, Chicago, Washington, Pittsburg, Montreal, Calgary, St. Louis. and so on and so on. Tampa, San Jose, Atlanta, LA and Florida would have to be scrapping the bottom.

Shelby (Posted 2008-08-01 16:00:25)
I am partial to the Original 6 but nothing beats the Indian Head.

Oil (Posted 2008-08-01 15:54:43)
The Oilers logo is not flashy but it is clean, simple, and very efective. The Blackhawks' logo is way to busy.

Tom Webster (Posted 2008-08-01 15:09:51)
Blackhawks have the best logo ever. As a Kings fan, however, I would like to see them higher, sure it's no purple and gold crown, but it's decent, at least in the top half. And, again, as a Kings fan it's nice to see the Ducks at the bottom of any list. But Capitals should be higher, love the new/old style.
