Rumor Roundup: Toronto's blueline blues

• After months of denying rumors he’d waive his no-movement clause, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe may consider a trade after all.

Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher recently claimed McCabe “may be softening” on accepting a trade, adding he’d wait for the blueliner to tell him which teams he’d be willing to waive his no-movement clause for.

Last February, Fletcher attempted to persuade McCabe to waive the clause prior to the NHL trade deadline, but the defenseman steadfastly refused, leading to speculation Fletcher might try to ban McCabe from reporting to training camp in September.

Fletcher denied this, but his determination to move McCabe undoubtedly has been a factor in the defenseman’s apparent change of heart.

McCabe’s preferred destinations will significantly limit where Fletcher can shop him and there’s no guarantee teams on that list will have interest in him, particularly given the difficulty of being able to comfortably absorb his $5.75-million cap hit.

That’s not to suggest a McCabe trade won’t happen, but it could take longer than Leaf fans expect.

• Another Leafs defenseman often mentioned in trade rumors could be staying in Toronto.

Pavel Kubina has a no-trade clause, but because the Leafs failed to make the 2008 playoffs a stipulation in his contract provided Fletcher with a two-month window to shop Kubina to any team without his consent.

Several months ago it was widely speculated Kubina, who’s being paid $5 million per season, would be as good as gone this summer especially after, apparently, having a last-minute change of heart on accepting a potential deadline day move to the San Jose Sharks.

Fletcher has since praised Kubina’s strong overall performance after returning from an injury at mid-season. Newly hired Leafs coach – and former Sharks bench boss – Ron Wilson has also spoken highly of the rearguard.

The deadline to move Kubina without having his consent is Aug. 15.

• Despite expectations the Chicago Blackhawks’ signing of goaltender Cristobal Huet last month spelled a trade for Nikolai Khabibulin, management insists that’s not the case.

In introducing Huet to the Chicago media last week, Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon claimed the team would start next season with both players splitting the goaltending duties, although he didn’t rule out the possibility of a trade later on.

Khabibulin has one season remaining on his contract at $6.75 million and with the Blackhawks now well over the $56.7-million salary cap, speculation has been rampant Tallon will shop ‘The Bulin Wall,’ possibly to the Ottawa Senators or Los Angeles Kings.

If Tallon doesn’t trade Khabibulin before the start of the season, he’ll have to consider other trade - or even demotion - options to get under the cap.

• Forget about the Dallas Stars signing former Minnesota Wild winger Mark Parrish. Stars co-GM Les Jackson recently told the Dallas Morning News their depth at right wing and a lack of cap space means there is no room for Parrish on the roster.

• Internet speculation suggests Parrish will return to the New York Islanders where he had his best NHL seasons, but so far there are no reports in the New York media suggesting the Isles are interested.

• The Nashville Predators reportedly contacted Parrish’s agent last week, seeing the winger as a potential replacement for Alexander Radulov should the young Russian winger play in the KHL this season.

what are you talking about DEB. i'm sure detroit would love to have sundin, they probably would if they didn't pay hossa 7.5mil a year already. The rangers want to take him i guarentee that, but they can't afford him. I hope you are a flyers fan because i think he is going there. they can afford him and he wants to play for them. as for McCabe he's going to LA or Florida. but you are crazy to think that mats should just retire. the guy had 78 points on a way below average team last season. he can still contribute and maybe you should think out what you are going to write before you write down something that makes you sound so NHL stupid. reminds me of that commercial where that guy is talking out of his ass, because he don't know nothing. i guess the next thing you aer going to say is Gretzky was a great defensman right. LOL.

Thank god McCabe is gone. He has done the best thing he can do to help the Leafs win the cup, by waiving his no trade clause. Thanks Bryan :)

yeah i am truly a diehard kings fan. i ask myself why though sometimes, but i'm not a bandwagon person. i totally agree with you on having those kind of players in the lineup will put people in the seats and bolster the hockey in california. at the same time though, gretzky changed everything about hockey in southern california. it's not just the kings that bring the market into california nowadays. you got the ducks and the sharks also. so the market is there no matter what, it's just all a matter of getting to top of the mountain is who the people are gonna wanna watch. the ducks are stanley cup champions, and the sharks always put up good numbers and have a lot of fans. it's just a shame for the kings that i believe the only reason why they have fans is because people like me have been watching them for over 20 years waiting for something to happen. Kings believe it or not sell out a lot of games during there 41 game home stand, it's just about time the front office gets right and starts winning. that being said, they are finally going in the right direction and will be contenders in the next 2 years i believe. it's gonna be fun to watch indeed. McCabe to LA, they need him.

Those are all good points, and I agree McCabe could have a couple of great years in L.A. (I say a couple because like you said earlier, the guy is 33 and there probably aren't many great years left). Without the spotlight of Toronto, I'm sure his game would improve. I also agree about Ersberg having more potential than Labarbera (I struggle with that name), because I see the latter as someone who may have peaked this past season, which to me is why they will most likely not resign him (on top of Bernier's natural development making Labarbera expendable). I truly hope that between Kopitar and Johnson they only eat up 14 million per season, because I believe L.A. is an important market for the NHL, and it needs young stars such as those two to become and remain a popular sport in L.A. Also, the Kings are not my team (though I do enjoy watching them as often as possible), so I don't know as much as you do, or seem to anyways.

jackthehat, i know that people think that McCabe is too expensive and such is not worth the value. Maybe he isn't. Blake sure wasn't so nothing new in that point of view. maybe McCabe can come out of his shell if he comes to LA because the toronto media is eating him alive right now. LA you could suck and the media would leave you alone, why? because they wonder more about Kobe Bryant and getting a football team to Los Angeles, or perhaps paying a washed up soccer player(David Beckham) 50 million dollars for 3 years. Kings could have a great season and still not get the credit they deserve. I think McCabe would be more comfortbale being there and when a player is more comfortable he will play better. and your right maybe he could become that teacher to johnson or the young guys on the blueline in general. Now as for resigning players for next season, the kings have Johnson and Kopitar to worry about signing wise. I'm sure the kings are not going to resign LaBarbera because they have Bernier coming in. Ersberg in my mind has way more potential than Labarbera. I say the most that Kopitar and Johnson take out a year for them is 5 to 7 mil a year. that's the most 14mil a year. they still have over 10 mil to play with even with the trade of McCabe. if it happens. So the Kings should be in good shape for years to come. Unless Lombardi goes out and spends on the free agent market in the seasons to come. they should be alright.
