You don't know Jack

I would like to set the record clear once and for all.

My son, Jack, never had any issues with the Carolina Hurricanes when he was selected No. 3 in 2005. He simply wanted to play at the University Of Michigan, which he grew up dreaming about since he was seven or eight years old.

In his wildest dreams, he never thought he would make the NHL and Michigan was his dream.

He met some incredible guys along the way, Brendan Morrison, Jason Botterill, Harold Schock, Mike Legg, Marty Turco, Bill Muckalt, Mike Komisarek to name a few. They were his idols.

Then you have to factor in Michigan coach Red Berenson, the team’s all-time scoring leader, an All-American and NHL coach of the year award winner. Jack’s mother, grandmother, and grandfather (three-sport star) are all UM grads, and that makes quite an impression on a young man.

The facts are that the Hurricanes wanted Jack to sign before he was ready in <his mind to leave Michigan. Please try and understand that Michigan was this kid’s dream even before the NHL.

It simply was a matter of Carolina wanting him before he wanted to go. Don't blame the kid for following his dream of going to one of the greatest universities in the world, playing for one on the greatest coaches in the world and pursuing his dream at his pace.

He gave his word to Red and he would not go back on it. I find that to be extremely rare today and I’m simply tired of hearing him getting slammed without all the facts.

Jack wishes nothing but the best to all the Hurricanes and the organization.

I, as his father, only ask that all fans simply research the facts and respect him for being a man of principle beyond all else.

Jack Johnson Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich.

Wow. Mr. Johnson, you may not have heard this phrase before, but you are a classic case of what we in the education world refer to as a "helicopter" parent. I plan on using you as example b, right behind Carl Lindros, the next time I have to speak to a parent about how their overweaning control of their children is overinflating their ego and handicapping their ability to grow up. P.S, as a life-long Kings fan I am looking forward to your 2011 letter explaining why you contacted a KHL official on your son's behalf while he was still under contract (Hammond, Rich; 6/22/2009).

Mr. Johnson. Somehow, I don't think this letter was meant for "the fans". I think this was meant for owners and GM's that are ALREADY raising an eyebrow at your obsessive behavior. How old is your son? Soon to be 22? He is not a "kid". He is a MAN, playing a MAN's game! As mentioned above, you are on your way to having an uncalled-for label stapled to your son's forehead...an unfair label that will ruin his career. Let the "professionals" do what the professionals do best for the sake of Jack's career. Go home, be good to your sweet wife and pay attention to Kenny! This letter is blatantly what it is...SPIN for the GM's of the league trying to start to repair a reputation that you helped perpetrate!!

Mr. Johnson: You did a great job raising your son. Time to let go. He's not a gravy train for you. Take a lesson from Carl Lindros. Stay out of your kid's professional career or you'll make everyone hate him. He doesn't deserve that, so just stop it.

Dear Mr. Johnson, Your son Jack Johnson, or as L.A Kings fans such as myself know as JMFJ (which of course means 'Jack MY FRIEND Johnson) is a very gifted and well respected member of the Kings franchise. As L.A Kings fans we understand the situation with Jack and Carolina and to be honest are happy it happened because it allowed us to be able to steal this future star from the Hurricanes. As a native of Windsor, Ontario I am well aware of the Michigan program and fully understand Jack's dreams and obligations with that great school. I simply do not understand some other situations that have happened within the last few weeks. Many of us Kings fans have been reading about how you personally contacted a team within the KHL inquiring about Jack's services next season. Why is there intrest with the KHL when Jack has a spot here in the NHL with the LA Kings next year? JMFJ is going to be a huge part of the Kings for hopefully the next 10 years. Lets work on getting that done before you look to bail him out of LA to make more money overseas. Don't be greedy. JMFJ is a good player but has not proven himself in the NHL level. Lets let him prove himself through his play and his big contract will come. Thanks. - A Frustrated LA KINGS FAN
