The Bible of Hockey is beginning a new chapter.

    W. Graeme Roustan, Chairman, Owner and Publisher of Roustan Media – and self-proclaimed hockey zealot – has purchased The Hockey News from Quebecor, Inc. The change in ownership is effective 11:59 pm on Jan. 27.

A Quebec born-and-bred entrepreneur who previously was Chairman at hockey equipment manufacturer Bauer, Roustan has been a longtime subscriber and fan of THN, and sees tremendous growth opportunity for the iconic title that was launched more than 70 years ago.

“I’m a little like Victor Kiam from those old Remington shaver ads,” said Roustan. “I loved the product so much, I bought the company.

“I believe The Hockey News is so unique in what it does, and it does a superior job. The plan now is to do more of it, to add to the content on various platforms, and reward subscribers with access to new initiatives we have on the drawing board.”

In addition to taking Performance Sports Group/Bauer public on the Toronto Stock Exchange, Roustan has built and owned community ice rinks across Canada and supplied refrigeration systems to the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators, among other ventures. He is currently a Governor for the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and owner of hockey stick brands Christian and Torspo. Roustan has appeared on THN’s annual 100 People of Power and Influence list multiple times.

Roustan also remains a passionate player, continuing a love affair with the game that began when he was three. He says he has full sets of gear stashed in various garages around the globe – Ontario, Florida, Russia and Belarus – so he’s prepared whenever he gets the call to participate.

“Many of my best memories are from lacing ‘em up,” said Roustan, who grew up in Montreal idolizing Serge Savard. “Being a player and fan, and having hockey pumping through my veins, I relate to the diehard fans and followers of THN. And I love THN’s unique positioning as an independent voice. It allows the editorial team to always call it as they see it.”

The Hockey News was founded in 1947, in Montreal, by partners Ken McKenzie and Wil Cote. It was subsequently owned by Whitney Communications and Transcontinental Media before being purchased by TVA Media, a division of Quebecor, in 2014.
