The Coachella Valley Firebirds have hired Brennan Sonne as an assistant coach, the team announced Monday.
Sonne, a product of Maple Ridge, B.C., spent the past three seasons as head coach of the WHL's Saskatoon Blades which included guiding them on a deep playoff run this past season. Sonne also won the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy in 2022-23, awarded to the WHL Coach of the Year.
Sonne got his first coaching gig in 2014-15 when he was hired by the Everett Silvertips (WHL) as an assistant coach. After three seasons in that role, Sonne headed over to France to serve as the head coach of Angers (Ligue Magnus).
Following four seasons in France (2017-2021), Sonne returned to Canada, joining the Blades as their head coach.
Prior to getting into coaching, Sonne enjoyed a playing career that saw him suit up in the BCHL, WHL, U Sports (formerly CIS) and in China.
With Sonne joining Derek Laxdal's coaching staff, he will have the opportunity to make his mark in his first pro coaching gig in North America. If his WHL success is any indication of his future, Sonne will be one to watch for.
