Former Chicago Wolves defenseman Griffin Mendel has signed a one-year deal with Rytiri Kladno in Czechia, it was announced this past week.
A product of Kelowna, B.C., Mendel split time last season between the Wolves and the Norfolk Admirals (ECHL). With the Wolves, he scored two goals and added six assists for eight points in 44 regular season games. In Norfolk, Mendel posted six points in eight games.
Before turning pro with the Wolves at the end of the 2021-22 season, Mendel played five NCAA seasons where he put up 35 points in 176 games.
With Mendel not extended a qualifying offer by the Hurricanes this offseason, he is taking his talents overseas. With the deal being for one year, it will be interesting to monitor if Mendel will look to return to North America. He proved he was solid depth in the AHL this past season and will most likely have interest if he can produce in 2024-25.
