The Vancouver Canucks have assigned winger Jonathan Lekkerimaki to the Abbotsford Canucks, the team announced Wednesday.
Lekkerimaki, who was cut by Sweden ahead of their opening World Championship game against the U.S. on Friday, is a game time decision for Abbotsford tonight.
A 2022 first-round pick of the Canucks, Lekkerimaki spent the majority of the season on loan to Orebro HK (SHL) where he scored 19 goals and added 12 assists for 31 points in 46 games. He added an assist in three playoff games as well.
After his season in Sweden ended, Lekkerimaki made his way to North America where he got into six games with Abbotsford, collecting a goal and an assist in the process.
A supremely talented offensive player, Lekkerimaki is most dangerous with the puck on his stick. He can beat goalies from almost anywhere on the ice if given the time and space to do so.
If Lekkerimaki does suit up for Abbotsford, it will be a welcome addition as they try to battle back from a 2-0 series deficit against the Ontario Reign.
