The Edmonton Oilers have recalled goaltender Jack Campbell and defenseman Philip Broberg from the Bakersfield Condors, it was announced Sunday.
The Oilers made the moves amidst their first round series against the Los Angeles Kings, in which they lead 3-1.
Given the Condors were swept in the first round by the Ontario Reign, the Oilers added to their depth without having to worry about depleting their farm team.
Since Campbell was sent down in November, he was solid for the Condors throughout the rest of the regular season, posting an 18-13-1 record to go along with a 2.63 GAA and a .918 SV%. In one game during the playoffs, Campbell struggled, letting in five goals on 35 shots en route to a Game 1 loss.
Broberg, the Oilers first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, had a solid season for the Condors. In 49 games played throughout the regular season, he scored five goals and added 33 assists for 38 points. Broberg added an assist in two games played in the playoffs.
With Broberg seeing only 12 NHL games this past season, he is bound to have been disappointed not to stick with the big club. While it is unclear if he is a part of the Oilers' future plans, his play has earned him a strong chance to stick next season.
It is unlikely that either get into games during the Oilers playoff run, barring an injury, but depth is never a bad thing to have.
