Forrest has spent the past four seasons as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

The Tampa Bay Lightning have hired J.D. Forrest as an assistant coach for the Syracuse Crunch, the team announced Wednesday.

The Lightning also announced that they have mutually parted ways with Syracuse assistant coach Daniel Jacob.

Forrest, a native of Auburn, N.Y., joins the Crunch after having worked for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins since 2016 - serving four seasons as an assistant coach and four seasons as head coach of the team.

Drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the sixth round of the 2000 NHL Draft, Forrest enjoyed a nine-year pro career that saw him play in the ECHL, AHL, Finland, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.

After hanging up his skates in 2014, Forrest got his coaching start as an intern assistant coach for the U.S. NTDP during the 2014-15 season.

Following one season in that role, Forrest coached in Austria for one season before joining the Penguins.

While Forrest is joining a new team for the first time in his AHL coaching career, having been in the league for close to a decade, he will be able to draw on his experience as he joins the Crunch.
