Center is the most valued forward position.

The Detroit Red Wings are a little lighter at center with the recent shelving of Andrew Copp. As a result, things have gotten murky for them at that position, and change needs to come sooner rather than later.

Five days from Trade Deadline day, the Red Wings must decide how many resources will be spent on acquiring new talent. We continue looking at that potential talent in our Trade Targets series by looking under the hood of Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks.

    What they are saying:

Things have been rocky for Zegras in Anaheim lately. After arriving on the scene with high expectations, the organization and the player appear to have soured.

He was asked to be more defensive last year and this year. He delivered, but this has also cost him offensive production. A change of scenery might be the best thing for both parties, allowing him to bring all the pieces together for a new team.

What does he bring to the table?

Zegras is a creative offensive player. He and Andrei Svechnikov are the only two NHLers to have scored three "Michigan goals" in the NHL. That takes a lot of skill.

Let's also not forget that Zegras once passed the puck from behind the net, over the net to Sonny Milano, who swung at it in mid-air and scored.

He's an incredible offensive talent who is finding his legs defensively. Both of those things could be of great use to any team looking to acquire him.

Is he a fit with the Red Wings?

All of the hard feelings about Zegras aside (because he injured Michael Rasmussen with a hit to the head), he's a great player. The proof in the pudding hasn't been there in the offensive production this season and last, but he's 23 and has two 20-goal, 60-point seasons.

His cap hit is very reasonable for someone who can add an offensive flair to a team's top-six forward group. If the Red Wings want to add a player who can help them offensively, Zegras should be their guy. If they would rather have someone who is a great two-way player and lacks an elite-level offensive ceiling, then they should look elsewhere.
