The New Jersey Devils jumped back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, earning a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
It was a low event first period, with the Canadiens holding a 10-5 shot advantage over the Devils after 20 minutes. Goaltender Nico Daws stood tall when Montreal pressured him in the period's final minutes to keep the score deadlocked at zero.
The Canadiens opened the scoring three minutes into the second period. Brendan Gallagher scored his ninth of the season. His linemates Jake Evans and Josh Anderson were credited with the assists.
Timo Meier tapped the puck into the net three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. It was his 11th goal of the season, assisted by defenseman Kevin Bahl and forward Tyler Toffoli. The latter extended his point streak to five games, a season-high.
Montreal captain Nick Suzuki gave his team the lead with seven minutes remaining in the period. Cole Caufield collected the primary assist, which extended his point streak against New Jersey to three games. Defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic collected the secondary assist.
Ondrej Palat scored his ninth of the season in the period's final minutes. Rookie defenseman Simon Nemec earned the lone assist.
Entering the second intermission, Montreal held a 20-14 shot advantage and blocked 13 shots. The score was tied at 2-2.
New Jersey was awarded a power play after Suzuki was called for hooking against Nico Hischier. The young captain scored on the man advantage, giving his team their first lead of the night.
Tyler Toffoli collected his second point of the night, and Luke Hughes earned his 20th helper of the season.
Jesper Bratt scored the game-winner with three minutes remaining in regulation. Meier blocked a shot in the defensive zone, allowing the young Swede to pick the puck up at the Devils' blue line and skate toward Montreal netminder Jake Allen.
Montreal pulled within one with Suzuki's second of the game, but the Devils secured a 4-3 victory.
