The 2021 second-round pick signed his entry-level contract with the team on Wednesday

The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Shai Buium to a three-year entry-level contract, the team announced Wednesday.

The 2021 second-round pick (36th overall) of the Wings recently completed his junior season with the Pioneers where he scored seven goals and added 29 assists for 36 points in 43 games while receiving NCHC Second All-Star Team honors.

Over the course of his NCAA career, Buium suited up in 120 games where he accumulated 14 goals and 61 assists for 75 points.

Buium is a smooth-puck moving defender who uses his skating ability to create chances for himself and others. He walks the blue line in the offensive zone with confidence, mixing in fakes to open up shooting lanes. He has the ability to find his teammates through seams and can use his long reach to break up plays in his own zone.

Buium will join the Grand Rapids Griffins for the rest of the season after signing an amateur try-out with the team. His entry-level contract is slated to begin next season.
