Alberta Theatre Projects working on play based on life of Theo Fleury

CALGARY - A play on the turbulent life of former NHL star Theo Fleury is in the works in Calgary.

Alberta Theatre Projects is in the early stages of developing "Don't Quit Before the Miracle."

The play was written by Kristie McLellan Day, who worked with Fleury on his autobiography "Playing With Fire."

Edmonton director Ron Jenkins is working with McLellan Day to help bring the production to the stage.

"Theo's story is made for theatre," Jenkins said in a release Friday. "His journey has both elements of tragedy and comedy."

McLellan Day was inspired to write the script after attending a Broadway performance of actor Carrie Fisher’s autobiographical one-woman show "Wishful Drinking."

Fleury, who has been open about his struggles with addiction, made headlines last fall after alleging in his book that he was abused by former coach Graham James.

Fleury says he's not surprised that there is interest in his story.

"Hey, I've always said my life is a movie or a play," Fleury said. "It's better than fiction."
