Alex Kovalev, Joe Thornton named captains for NHL all-star game

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens winger Alex Kovalev and San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton were named captains for the all-star game, the NHL announced Thursday.

Kovalev, who has 12 goals and 21 assists, will captain the Eastern Conference when he makes his third career all-star appearance Sunday.

Thornton, tied for second in the league with 43 assists, captains the Western Conference when he plays in his sixth straight all-star game.
