Alex Ovechkin takes goal scoring lead with blistering slapshot

Alex Ovechkin emphatically took over the lead in the NHL goal scoring race. With the Washington Capitals on a power play, Ovechkin unleashed a bullet of a one-timer that found the back of the net. Ovechkin’s 29th goal came as the Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0.

At the All-Star Game’s Hardest Shot Competition, many thought the players to watch were Dustin Byfuglien and Shea Weber, but it was Alex Ovechkin who surprised, landing himself in second place with a 101 MPH blast.

He put that cannon on display Wednesday night and took the NHL’s goal scoring lead in the process. With less than three minutes left in the second frame, and the Capitals on the power play, Ovechkin received a Mike Green no-look pass right in his wheelhouse and turned on it. Blink and you’ll miss Ovechkin’s 29th goal of the season hit the back of the net.

There isn’t any goaltender alive that could have stopped that without cheating to Ovechkin’s side. That’s an ill-advised chance to take when Green is the in the high slot, though. And while the Ovechkin blast is the main attraction of this clip, the backhand saucer pass by Nicklas Backstrom is picture perfect, too. It's enough to make you feel bad for Pittsburgh netminder Marc-Andre Fleury.

Ovechkin’s 29th marker of the season puts him one ahead of Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin, but it’s also his 13th power play tally of the campaign, one more than San Jose Sharks winger Joe Pavelski. Ovechkin is, for the time being, 2014-15's goal scoring king, no matter how you want to look at it.

The Capitals went on to down the Penguins 4-0.
