Plans for the move were announced Thursday and received the necessary approval in a vote by the AHL’s board of governors during a meeting Friday.
The new Quad City Flames (formerly the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights) will begin their 2007-08 season this fall, playing home games at The Mark of the Quad Cities in Moline, Ill.
“I am thrilled to welcome the Quad Cities to the AHL family,” AHL president David Andrews said in a statement. “The area’s longtime hockey fans can look forward to great rivalries and the excitement of American Hockey League action.”
The Quad Cities of Moline and Rock Island in Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa are within 400 kilometres of five American Hockey League rivals: the Peoria Rivermen, Chicago Wolves, Milwaukee Admirals, Iowa Stars and AHL newcomers, the Rockford IceHogs.
Quad City, Rockford and the Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland will all be new cities in the 29-team league next season.
