Ak Bars Kazan defeated Lokomotiv Yaroslavl 5-2 Monday to even the best-of-seven KHL Gagarin Cup final series 2-2.
Alexei Morozov got the Snow Leopards on the board early with a goal in the third minute. Six minutes later, Jukka Hentunen added to Ak Bars’ early lead. However, Johan Okerman converted a power play opportunity for Lokomotiv in the 18th minute to halve Kazan’s lead heading into the first intermission.
Ak Bars answered quickly in the second period, striking twice in the first two minutes to increase their lead to 4-1 thanks to Dmitry Obukhov’s score in the 21st minute and Jukka Hentunen’s second goal of the game 27 seconds later.
Lokomotiv’s Josef Vasichek broke through for a goal in the 29th minute to cut Ak Bars’ lead to 4-2, but Ak Bars’ Tony Martensson responded in the 35th minute to restore a three goal lead for the Snow Leopards.
Lokomotiv pulled netminder Georgi Gelashvili after the second period and replaced him with backup Sergei Zvyagin. Zvyagin and Ak Bars’ Frederik Norrena combined for a scoreless third period, resulting in a 2-2 tie in the series.
Game 5 of the KHL Gagarin Cup final will be played Wednesday in Kazan.
