It was an afternoon to remember for two Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
Newly acquired winger Ales Hemsky earned his first, second and third assists in a Sens uniform, while rookie Mike Hoffman scored his first NHL goal in a 5-3 Ottawa win over Winnipeg.
For the hometown Jets, the game felt like a nightmare. Starter Ondrej Pavelec stopped just 15 of 20 shots before getting the hook midway through the second after Hoffman made it 5-2 for the Sens.
And while Pavelec took the brunt of the blame, he wasn’t the only one making mistakes. Ottawa’s third goal came with a mess of players tangled behind the net, all thanks to Jets defender Mark Stuart. Stuart slid to block a shot and ended up sweeping Pavelec off his feet and into the corner.
Hemsky didn’t get the assist, but he helped on that goal, too.
Not bad for a guy the Sens got for two mid-round picks out of Edmonton.
