The Bakersfield Condors pranked the media – including us – on April Fool’s Day by “leaking” a horrible new logo.
Clap, clap, clap. The Bakersfield Condors continue to set the standard for comedy and creativity among pro hockey franchises. Their wacky promotions this season have included everything from Star Wars jersey night to a Hairiest Back contest. Seriously. Last week a guy named Eric Oldes won $75 gift card to a burger joint and four seats at the glass for another game thanks to his man mane. His daughter and fiancee submitted him. The Condors embrace the fun of hockey like no other team – and they outdid themselves with today’s prank. Better yet, they got us. Well, one of us. Our managing editor, Edward Fraser, received the following “confidential” press release, which was sent by “accident,” this morning:

RILEY/BARTL – If you can look this over one last time when you get in to make sure it is good to go. Also, we’re expecting the quote from Edmonton later tonight once they land in LA. We will have the event live streamed and media is confirmed.
CONDORSTOWN, Calif. – The Bakersfield Condors, owned by the Edmonton Oilers, revealed the team’s primary logo for their inaugural season in the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2015-16 earlier today at an event held at noon at the Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center. The AHL is the top level of minor league hockey with nearly 90% of players in the National Hockey League (NHL) having played in the AHL.
“Nobody has more fun, or more colours, than us,” said Condors Team President Matthew Riley. “Keeping our name was essential, because this is Condorstown and was overwhelmingly the choice of our fans. They will see the top prospects, future NHL stars, playing in the Grey, Red, Blue, Orange, and Green of the Condors. The colours represent the past, present, and future of this organization and will be forever lasting.”

Inspired by the traditional primary colours of the Condors during their 17 years of existence (Green, Red, Black) and the colours of the team’s owners the Edmonton Oilers (Blue, Orange) –

It is a head-on look at one of the most feared birds adorned with a “maple-leaf/stars” tuft of feathers on top to represent the uniting of the United States and Canada in Bakersfield

Then we reminded him of the date. Then he tried the “CLICK HERE” link, which revealed:
And then we laughed. A lot. The logo is pure genius, amazingly ugly but just believable enough to look like someone “tried” to make it good. Good on the Condors staff getting Edward’s goat. And here’s hoping the fun stuff continues when the franchise joins the AHL as Edmonton’s affiliate next season.
