To pay tribute to the greatest goaltender in Washington Capitals history, Braden Holtby has an Olaf Kolzig inspired design on his new mask that was specially made for the Winter Classic.
No goaltender is more synonymous with the Washington Capitals than
Olaf Kolzig, and for the Winter Classic, present day Capitals netminder
Braden Holtby will pay tribute to ‘Olie the Goalie’ with a special mask. Holtby’s mask for the outdoor game may not bear any marks that specifically mention Kolzig, but the design is actually very similar to that one which Kolzig wore during the ‘90s.
Dave Gunnarsson of DaveArt posted the pictures on the official DaveArt Instagram account, saying that in order to get the right old school feel for the mask, he painted Uncle Sam with a normal paint brush instead of airbrushing the design on. Kolzig, who played with the Capitals for 16 seasons, is the team’s all-time games leader for goaltenders (ninth of all players), wins leader, shutout leader, and helped backstop the Capitals to their only Stanley Cup Final appearance. He is currently the professional development coach for Washington. Holtby will likely be the starting goaltender for the Capitals when they take on the Blackhawks in the 2015 Winter Classic.
