Tuesday night, Brandon Dubinsky made a no-look, behind-the-back backhand pass right onto the tape of teammate Matt Calvert. Calvert made no mistake, burying the feed and completing the highlight reel play.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have had a miserable season, their hopes dashed by injury after injury, but Brandon Dubinsky’s no-look, behind-the-back pass will give fans something to cheer about.
Less than two minutes into the second frame of Tuesday night’s contest with the Buffalo Sabres, Dubinsky collected a puck off the back boards following a chip into the corner by defenseman Jack Johnson. Then, facing the glass and with his eyes on the puck, Dubinsky made a backhand feed to Matt Calvert that he isn’t likely to replicate.
The pass itself is highlight enough, but it certainly helps the highlight reel caliber of the feed that Calvert finished the play off by burying his shot behind Michal Neuvirth.
Dubinsky’s helper was his 14th of the season and 21st point in just 33 games this season. Had he been healthy the entire year, Dubinsky’s points per game pace would have had him in line for one of the best season’s of his career. For Dubinsky, like for the Blue Jackets, there is always next year.
