Brandon Pirri’s incredible run continues with unthinkable spin-o-rama goal

Florida Panthers winger Brandon Pirri is on a goal-scoring run the likes of which is rarely seen. Since returning from a shoulder injury, Pirri has scored 13 goals in 17 games, and has pushed his goal total to 24. If Pirri ends his season with at least one more point — goal or assist — he will become one of six players in NHL history to have 25 points with at least 20 of those points coming off of goals.

Is there any player in the NHL on more of a tear than Florida Panthers winger Brandon Pirri?

Thursday night, Pirri scored his 22nd goal of the season on a spinning, no-look wristshot that slid along the ice and found its way past Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin. The goal, which came five minutes into the second period of Florida’s home outing against the Canes, was Pirri’s 13th goal in 17 games since returning from injury and goes to prove that sometimes when things are going well, they’re going really well. Take a look at the unthinkable goal:

What makes Pirri’s scoring so interesting — other than the offensive outburst and that he has become a 20-goal scorer for the first time in his career — is that he only has 24 points. That’s right; Pirri has scored 22 goals while registering just two assists. There is only one player in NHL history, Cy Denneny, that has done what Pirri is doing to end his season — and that’s end the year with more than 20 goals and fewer than 3 assists.

With his next goal, and the way Pirri is playing there will be a next goal, he will become the first player in NHL history to record 23 goals with only two assists in NHL history. If he can hit 25-point plateau, he’ll be one of only seven players to record 25 points where at least 20 of those points came from goals. Of the other six, none played after the 1929-30 season.
