CAA to continue representing Seth Jones; could have marketing relationship with Roc Nation

A lot of things are going right for Seth Jones right now – his Portland Winterhawks are in the Western League final, he’s the No. 1 prospect for the 2013 draft and his hometown team, the Colorado Avalanche, just won the draft lottery. But signing with rap mogul Jay-Z is not one of them.

After reading such reports recently, Jones’ agent at Creative Artists Agency, Pat Brisson, wanted to clear something up: Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company has a marketing relationship with the group, but will not be “signing” Jones.

“As far as doing something with them and Seth, we’re not sure yet,” Brisson said. “But to clarify, they’re not going to represent him.”

What could happen is that Roc Nation would work with CAA on marketing opportunities for the youngster – but the same could be said for top draft forward Nathan MacKinnon (a hip-hop fan himself) or John Tavares, whose Islanders will move into Jay-Z’s Brooklyn borough and the Barclays Center in the near future.

CAA’s business includes Hollywood stars and athletes from the four major sports. The involvement of Jay-Z comes from a deal struck with CAA involving baseball player Robinson Cano and Roc Nation is seen as a partner with marketing expertise.

“In other words,” Brisson said, “they’re adding another resource in Roc Nation and Jay-Z. Sports and entertainment go hand in hand these days. Sometimes it’s good to step outside the box.”

Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter) first learned of Jones through the defenseman’s father, Popeye, an assistant coach with the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. Until very recently, the rapper was a part-owner of the franchise, selling his stake in order to get into the sports representative business.
