In an effort to keep people mailing as many letters as possible, Canada Post is doing what many Canadian businesses do: turn to the country’s unending obsession with hockey.
Over the course of the past 22 years, Canada’s national postal service has issued more than 50 NHL-themed stamps. Last year, they released postage featuring all seven current Canadian NHL franchises;and this year, they’re honoring a half-dozen legendary NHL defensemen from Original Six teams: Bruins icon Bobby Orr, Maple Leafs superstar Tim Horton, Canadiens all-time great Doug Harvey; Rangers star Harry Howell; Red Wings phenom Red Kelly; and Blackhawks Hall-of-Famer Pierre Pilote.
The artwork involved in the new stamps is stunning, with each player’s jersey number in the background and a brilliant image of the player front and center. Even if you prefer to send your correspondence electronically, you still may want to pick up a few sheets of these stamps as a collector’s item.
Canada Post issued the first hockey-themed stamp in 1956, but the country’s voracious appetite for the sport all but assures the company will continue to produce variations on the same theme.
If they’re all as eye-catching as their latest batch is, nobody will ever complain they’re going to the well once too often.
