TORONTO – The Montreal Canadiens were without captain Saku Koivu and offensive defenceman Mark Streit for Saturday night’s game with the Toronto Maple Leafs, both players knocked out of the lineup by foot injuries.
Both players will be re-evaluated by doctors in Montreal on Monday once the swelling goes down. Koivu and Streit were both injured during Friday’s 4-3 overtime win in Buffalo but played the entire game – Koivu and Streit both assisting on the overtime winner by Chris Higgins.
The Canadiens have been a relatively healthy group all season long but suddenly the injuries are coming at the very worst moment with the playoffs 10 days away. Winger Guillaume Latendresse is also day to day with a neck injury.
Streit has a career-high 58 points (12-46) in 78 games this season while Koivu has 56 points (16-40) in 77 games.
