Montreal Canadiens netminder Mike Condon will be wearing some Massachusetts-centric gear at the Winter Classic against Boston. Condon’s mask will feature New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, quarterback Tom Brady and one of the team’s slogans.
Montreal Canadiens goaltender
Mike Condon is in the interesting position of being a born and raised Massachusetts boy playing for the Bruins most hated rival. But even if he’s making his name playing for what most in Boston would consider the enemy, that doesn’t mean Condon can’t still pay tribute to his roots when he heads outdoors for the Winter Classic in his home state. When Condon hits the ice for the Canadiens Friday, his mask will at first glance look like it’s keeping with Montreal’s classic theme. The front and sides of the mask are covered with Canadiens logos and even include the globe, which signifies the ‘World Champion’ jerseys Montreal is paying homage to for the Winter Classic. But it’s the back panel of his mask that’s most interesting.
Instead of going with initials of family members or a design representing the New Year’s Day outdoor game, Condon has instead gone with pencilled images of New England Patriot’s coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. That’s not all, though, as four Vince Lombardi Trophies — the NFL’s championship — span the white space between Belichick and Brady. That’s one for each year the Patriots have won a Super Bowl under Belichick with Brady at the helm. The mask also features one of the Pats’ slogans — Do Your Job — on the bottom of the plate. The mask was designed by DaveArt’s David Gunnarsson. Normally, the design wouldn’t make much sense, but the Winter Classic game will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., the home of the Patriots. And Condon — who was born in Needham, Mass., and grew up in nearby Holliston, Mass. — will be only about half an hour away from his hometown, so it’s not hard to guess where his rooting interests lie when it comes to the NFL. Condon isn’t the first goaltender to have a cross-sport mask for an outdoor game. New York Rangers goaltender
Henrik Lundqvist had images of greats from the MLB’s New York Yankees on his mask for the Stadium Series in 2014.
