After a game saving stop by Mike Smith led Arizona to a shootout against the Chicago Blackhawks, Coyotes rookie Lucas Lessio shook Antti Raanta out of his crease for a gorgeous shootout goal. Arizona held on for the 3-2 shootout victory.
If you’re an Arizona Coyotes fan, you haven’t had much to cheer about this season. The Coyotes have won only 20 games, they sit well out of a playoff spot, and the team isn’t quite in the basement so their shot at landing Jack Eichel or Connor McDavid at the draft isn’t that high.
But if you need something to lift your spirits, this shootout goal by Lucas Lessio will help. Lessio, who has played in just 17 games this season for the Coyotes, may only have two goals and three points, but he showed in the skills competition that he definitely has nice hands.
If the move doesn’t impress you, at least the celebration will. Antti Raanta had no chance to push back across the crease to deny Lessio, which might be a promising sign for a team that has won just four of nine shootouts this season.
Lessio was selected in the second round of the 2011 draft by the Coyotes, and played 69 games with the AHL’s Portland Pirates last season, scoring 29 goals and 54 points. In 29 games with Portland this season, Lessio has 10 goals and 18 points.
