Dan Hamhuis badly bloodied after slapshot to the face

There was a scary scene in Vancouver Wednesday night as Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis took a slapshot to the face, leaving him bloodied and writhing on the ice. Hamhuis, 32, was able to get to his feet and spent the night in hospital. Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said Hamhuis “lost some teeth and probably broke his jaw.”

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis suffered a gruesome injury Wednesday night after taking a slapshot to the face off the stick of New York Rangers blueliner Dan Boyle.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the third period, Hamhuis, 32, lost control of the puck while attempting to head behind the Vancouver net, which left the puck sitting to the left of the Canucks net. Hamhuis scrambled out to the now-loose puck, but was beaten to it by Rangers center Derick Brassard. He passed it to Boyle, who unloaded a big shot that went straight into Hamhuis’ face.

Hamhuis immediately threw off his gloves and began clutching his face, and there was a significant amount of blood after Hamhuis got up from the ice. He was helped to the dressing room by the training staff and teammates. You can see the play below:

Hamhuis’ instability while he’s getting off the ice is frightening. He was seen leaving the game on a stretcher and, post-game, Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said Hamhuis would be spending the night in the hospital.

“Hamhuis lost some teeth and probably broke his jaw,” Desjardins said. “His wife was with him when he left.”

There was no full injury update on Hamhuis, but it’s likely the Canucks will offer a complete update at some point Thursday. There is certainly concern that he suffered a concussion on the play, which would be his third documented head injury in the NHL. Hamhuis was concussed twice in the 2010-11 season — once in February, once in March — and missed 10 games.
