HOUSTON – David Desharnais scored two short-handed goals and added two assists and Curtis Sanford made 38 saves as the Hamilton Bulldogs blanked the Houston Aeros 5-0 in American Hockey League action Tuesday.
Sanford was particularly impressive in the second period, when he was shelled with 23 shots and stopped them all.
Desharnais now leads the AHL with 40 points (10 goals, 30 assists).
Dustin Boyd, Olivier Fortier and Ryan Russell also scored for Hamilton (19-9-4), which leads the North Division by six points over Toronto.
Houston starting goaltender Anton Khudobin allowed all five goals on 17 shots before being replaced at the 13:02 mark of the second period. Matt Hackett stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief for the Aeros (16-15-3).
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 9:12 of the first period. Boyd grabbed the rebound of a Brendon Nash shot and fired it past Khudobin. Hamilton went up 2-0 at 11:26 of the first while on a power play. Gabriel Dumont received a pass from Desharnais before centring the puck to the front of the net. Fortier skated up and whacked the puck past Khudobin.
Desharnais gave Hamilton a 3-0 lead at 12:59. Russell fed the puck to Desharnais, who ripped a shot that sailed over the right shoulder of Khudobin.
Russell increased the Hamilton’s lead to 4-0 at 2:51 of the second period, then Desharnais scored his second short-handed goal of the game at 6:58. Desharnais stickhandled past Khudobin and scored, ending the goaltender’s night.
