Despite record sales, Canada will go back to old logo after Olympics

VANCOUVER – Despite the fact Canadian Olympic sweaters have posted mind-boggling numbers and added significantly to the coffers of Hockey Canada, president Bob Nicholson emphatically said the organization will immediately go back to its old logo after the Olympics.

Hockey Canada’s logo was removed from the sweaters under orders of the Canadian Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee prior to the games, but a defiant Nicholson said his body won’t be keeping it.

“That discussion-debate was about who we are and Hockey Canada and the logo that the players put on,” Nicholson said. “And I would have that debate and that discussion again. I’m ecstatic with our jersey sales, but we’re going back to our logo. That’s who we are as Hockey Canada.”

Nicholson said he has been told by Nike, which manufactures the sweaters, that sales for this logo will be bigger than any other sporting event in history, including the World Cup of soccer. Nicholson said Hockey Canada had sweater sales of $20 million after the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake, but had that much alone before the Vancouver Olympics even began.

“But it’s still about our logo and who we are and we only have one,” Nicholson said. “Would the Toronto Maple Leafs change? Would the Montreal Canadiens change? Absolutely not.”
