Detroit Red Wings scheduled to open their training camp Sunday

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings open training camp Sunday, hoping for another shot at winning the Stanley Cup that narrowly eluded them last season.

The Red Wing lost in seven games to Pittsburgh in last season’s final. And if that wasn’t enough Detroit also lost Marian Hossa and Mikael Samuelsson to free agency. Also gone is Jiri Hudler, who decided to play in Russia.

Because of the salary cap, the Wings weren’t big shoppers in the off-season free agent market. Instead, they’re hoping younger players such as Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader and Jonathan Ericsson can contribute.
