New Jersey Devils winger Stephen Gionta got a five-minute major and game misconduct for a dirty spear on Ottawa Senators blueliner Mark Borowiecki. Gionta has no suspension history and had only two minutes in penalty minutes in 2015-16.
New Jersey right winger Stephen Gionta might be expecting a call from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety after a spearing major Thursday night.
Late in the second frame of Thursday’s game, the Devils had possession in the Senators’ zone when Ottawa defenseman Mark Borowiecki and Gionta got tangled up. Gionta took exception to a shot from the Senators defender and caught him with a deadly spear:
Gionta was handed a major for spearing and a game misconduct while Borowiecki skated to the bench in significant pain.
Through six games this season, Gionta had only taken two minutes in penalties and has no suspension history. The 32-year-old depth winger isn’t known for playing on the edge or a history of dirty play, but he may very well get tagged for his infraction Thursday.
