Don Cherry says he’s willing to invest in NHL franchise in Winnipeg

TORONTO – Don Cherry says he would invest in an NHL team in Winnipeg.

In a pair of radio interviews Thursday, the Hockey Night in Canada commentator said he’d be willing to put up his own money to support a franchise in the Manitoba capital.

“It’s a winner,” he told all-sports radio station the Fan 590 in Toronto. “I’d be happy to invest.”

There have been reports that the Phoenix Coyotes could end up in Winnipeg if a deal to keep them in Glendale, Ariz., can’t be reached.

“Winnipeg is can’t miss,” said Cherry.

Cherry said the Coyotes will never be successful as long as they’re in Phoenix.

“It’s beyond me how they can keep it there,” he said.

Cherry also made similar comments during an interview with 92 CITI FM in Winnipeg.
