Don’t give up on Iggy

Henry Teng, Calgary

Enough already with this what-have-you-done-for-me-lately mentality by Flames fans.

Jarome Iginla is the heart of the Calgary Flames and he has been for a long time.

This is the man who could’ve left our franchise a few times to hit the open market for bigger and better contracts, but decided to take a hometown discount to stay with us.

He didn’t quit on us when he was the only bright spot of this organization and now, all around this city, people are quitting on him.

Remember, Iginla went to the Olympics and without him making that wonderful pass to Sidney Crosby, Canada might not have won Gold. So why is it that when Crosby and Alex Ovechkin came back from the Olympic’s with slumps, no one gave up on them?

Simple, because they have a solid team built around them to win whether Crosby or Ovechkin are scoring or not.

Flames fans need to wake-up and realize that there’s only so much one player can accomplish on his own, even if he’s an all-star.

There needs to be that supporting cast, which Iginla doesn’t have. Take a look at Rick Nash, one all-star forward on the team; no supporting cast, how often does Columbus make the playoffs? Should the Blue Jackets trade away Rick Nash?

Of course not, it just doesn’t make sense to trade away your best player. I’m not completely oblivious to the situation, Iginla obviously had a bad year compared to his usual output. His trade value on the market is below what it should be, which means if we trade him, we wouldn’t get what we deserve for a player like Jarome.

With that in mind, what is out there that would be worthy of our franchise player?

Stop with all this negativity towards our captain; it takes more than one man to build a winning team and unfortunately we don’t have it yet. But don’t give-up on our best piece.
