Doug Weight scores two third-period goals as Blues beat Canucks 3-1

The Blues won their first game since jettisoning their top two players in the final 48 hours before Tuesday’s deadline. Bill Guerin went to San Jose on Tuesday and Keith Tkachuk to Atlanta on Sunday.

With their top two scorers on other teams, Weight helped fill the gap for one night. Petr Cajanek found Weight as he rushed in on the right side alone and then sent a slapshot past Roberto Luongo to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead. He added his second goal – and eighth of the season – on the power play with just over two minutes left.

Curtis Sanford, filling in for the injured Manny Legace, came close to earning a shutout after stopping 25 of 26 Vancouver shots. It appeared he stopped them all.

The referees awarded the Canucks their goal with seven minutes left in the second period, only after video goal judge Jerry Burt spent nearly 10-minutes reviewing the play. After Sanford fell down while making a kick save against Tommi Santala, the puck was knocked behind the goal where Daniel Sedin settled it and scored on a wrap-around shot.
