Eric Staal, Jonathan Quick and Michael Grabner collect NHL player weekly honours

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Hurricanes centre Eric Staal was named the NHL’s first star of the week Tuesday after putting up four points in a pair of victories during an abbreviated week.

The captain of Team Staal at last weekend’s 2011 NHL all-star festivities helped Carolina close within a point of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Staal had one assist in a 6-4 victory over Toronto, two goals and one assist in a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders, and then closed the week with a pair of third-period goals in Team Staal’s 11-10 loss to Team Lidstrom at the all-star game.

Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick registered a pair of victories heading into the all-star break, helping the Kings gain momentum in a tight race for playoff berths in the Western Conference.
