HAMBURG – Off-season signing Ethan Moreau scored in the third period to give the Los Angeles Kings a 5-4 exhibition win over the Hamburg Freezers on Tuesday.
Justin Williams got the Kings off to a flying start when he scored in the first minute.
Serge Aubin equalized but Alec Martinez replied immediately for the visitors before Hamburg’s Kevin Schmidt scored to leave it 2-2 at the end of the first period.
Aubin put Hamburg ahead in the second, before Anze Kopitar and Brad Richardson replied to give L.A the lead.
Hamburg forward Brendan Brooks, a native of St. Catharines, Ont., gave the home fans reason to cheer with 29 seconds remaining when he shot to the top right corner for a late consolation after Moreau gave the Kings a two-goal cushion.
The Kings’ regular season begins with games against the New York Rangers in Stockholm on Friday, and the Buffalo Sabres in Berlin on Saturday.
Los Angeles forward Dustin Brown said the team is happy to be done with exhibition games.
“We have had a pretty long pre-season and a pretty heavy workload here for the past three weeks,” said Brown. “It’s been too long. Guys want to play in a real game. Pre-season is exactly that—pre-season. Now we are ready to jack up the intensity and play a real game where every little detail counts.”
