Calgary Flames goalie Karri Ramo has struggled with consistency, but Tuesday against the Rangers he kept his team in the game with an eye-popping save on Blueshirts winger J.T. Miller.
The play took place in the first period of the Flames’ road game against the Blueshirts: a shot from Rangers blueliner Ryan McDonagh deflected off of the goalpost behind Ramo, and the rebound bounced to Miller, who had an open net and could’ve scored his sixth of the season. That’s not what happened.
Ramo’s spectacular dive back across the crease kept the game scoreless. The 28-year-old Finn isn’t going to unseat Calgary No. 1 netminder Jonas Hiller, but if the Flames are going to lock up one of the Western Conference’s playoff spots, they’ll need him to come up with more saves like this down the stretch. Well, maybe not exactly like this. After all, a spectacular save like the one Ramo made on Miller tends to cover up the fact the goalie’s teammates left an opponent that wide open to begin with.
