TORONTO – Philadelphia forward Jody Shelley has been suspended for two games for hitting Bruins defenceman Adam McQuaid from behind in a game over the weekend.
The incident happened in the second period when both players were chasing the puck as it rolled toward the Philadelphia end. Shelley gave a two-handed shove that knocked McQuaid off his skates and the Bruins defenceman was just able to get his hands up and avoid hitting the boards headfirst.
McQuaid stayed down for several minutes but later returned to the game. Shelley, who was given a game misconduct and a five-minute major, later apologized.
“When I was coming off the ice, he was waiting for me there,” said McQuaid. “He said he was sorry and he didn’t mean to, so I’ve just got to take what he says.”
Shelley will forfeit $11,827.96 in salary and will miss games Tuesday against Pittsburgh and Wednesday at Montreal. He is eligible to return Saturday when the Flyers host the Rangers.
