Former NHL player, coach Gerard Gallant takes over junior Sea Dogs

SAINT JOHN – Former Columbus Blue Jackets coach Gerard Gallant has been named head coach of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Gallant, 45, spent seven years on the Blue Jackets coaching staff, serving as head coach from Jan. 1, 2004 to Nov. 13, 2007. The former Detroit Red Wings forward was an assistant coach of the New York Islanders in 2007-08.

The Sea Dogs also hired Mike Kelly, a former Vancouver Canucks assistant coach, as associate coach and director of hockey operations. Both Gallant and Kelly signed three-year contracts.

Norm Gosselin, the club’s head scout since 2005, was promoted to director of player personnel.
