NEW YORK – Forwards Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings and Ales Hemsky of the Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward were named the NHL’s three stars of the week Monday.
Brown was named the first star after scoring game-winning goals in consecutive road contests. He capped his week by participating in his first NHL all-star game, recording an assist in the Western Conference’s 12-11 shootout loss Sunday in Montreal.
Ward was named the second star after stopping 67 of 68 shots and helping Carolina earn two road victories. He stopped 35 shots and recorded his second shutout of the year and eight of his career in a 2-0 victory at Toronto on Jan. 19. He made 32 saves in a 2-1 victory at Pittsburgh the following night to improve his season record to 18-14-3 with a 2.57 goals-against average and .911 save percentage.
Hemsky earned third-star honours after recording two goals and two assists in his lone game last week, a 4-3 win over Columbus on Jan. 27. Hemsky scored the winning goal with 34.9 seconds remaining in regulation time.
