“My first game, I was more or less just excited. I’d waited for a long time, being on the injured reserve list out of training camp, so I was really excited to get my first one in.

It was a little bit special playing against the Edmonton Oilers. My dad (former Calgary Flames and New York Rangers center Carey Wilson) always talked about them growing up, so it was nice to get it in against them.

I didn’t know I was going to be playing until after the pre-game skate at noon, so my dad couldn’t have caught a plane that quickly to make it, but he watched the game on television. He just told me, ‘go out there, don’t be nervous, and just have fun’.

As soon as I got out there on the ice, I looked across and I saw Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner and realized I had made it.

My first shift was just a lot of ‘get the puck and get it to someone else’. I just wanted to get in and get a feel for the game.

I was excited, but not too over-the-top because that’s when you start making mistakes.”
