The Canadiens fired head coach Guy Carbonneau on Monday,
replacing him with Gainey.
Carbonneau was ousted 66 games into his third season with
Montreal, which was on pace to make its second consecutive
postseason appearance under the former Canadiens captain.
The 48-year-old Carbonneau, a member of the Canadiens for parts
of 13 seasons, coached Montreal to a 124-83-23 record in his
two-plus seasons behind the bench.
Gainey, also a former player with the Canadiens, has served as
the club’s general manager since June 2003. The five-time
Stanley Cup winner previously served as Montreal’s interim head
coach for the final 23 regular-season games in 2005-06.
The Oilers, who are wrapping up a four-game road trip, avoided a
third straight loss with a 4-1 triumph over the Toronto Maple
Leafs on Saturday.
