Game 3 draws largest U.S. TV audience for Stanley Cup final on cable since 2002

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Stanley Cup final continues to be a TV ratings hit south of the border while the Canadian numbers are consistently surpassing last year’s figures.

Game 3 drew the largest TV audience for the Stanley Cup final on U.S. cable in eight years.

The Flyers’ 4-3 overtime victory over the Blackhawks on Versus on Wednesday night earned a 3.1 rating and averaged 3.6 million viewers. It was the highest-rated and most-watched telecast in network history.

It drew the most viewers for a Stanley Cup final since Game 2 of the Carolina-Detroit series in 2002, which averaged almost 3.8 million viewers.

In Canada, Game 3 drew 2.960 million CBC viewers. That was up from the 1.807 million viewers for Game 3 a year ago. But comparing those numbers is difficult, because a new audience-measuring system has seen sports ratings skyrocket in Canada since it was introduced in September.
