The biggest match-up of Halloween night: It’s Anaheim’s Corey Perry vs. Dallas’ Tyler Seguin in a dynamite showdown of West rivals. Who will win the match-up on the Eve of Hallows?
There are four games on a spooky Friday night Halloween schedule for the NHL, the biggest belongs to a match-up between the Anaheim Ducks – tops in the Western Conference with 16 points – and the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
The squads feature formidable line-ups that include stars such as: Jamie Benn, Jason Spezza, Ryan Kesler and Ryan Getzlaf, but tonight’s big match-up will feature the top goal scorer in the NHL in the Ducks’ Corey Perry – who is tied with Rick Nash – and the Stars’ Tyler Seguin, who is tied for most points in the league.
Let’s compare the stars and make a prediction as to who will win in tonight’s head-to-head match-up.
Perry, a winner of both the Hart Memorial Trophy and Maurice Richard Trophy is one of the league’s best goal scoring threats and is a crucial factor in the Ducks’ success.
The stats are pretty clear, when Perry scores, the Ducks likely win. Aside from the Ducks’ opening night loss to the Penguins where Perry had a hat trick, Anaheim is undefeated this season when the Peterborough, On. native lights the red lamp. The winger is a one-time 50-goal scorer, two-time 40-goal scorer and has scored more than 30 goals four times. The man knows how to find mesh.
Also to note, since Perry was drafted with the 28th overall draft pick by the Ducks in 2003, Anaheim has only had one losing season (2011-12). Yes, this has more to do with building a sound franchise, but Perry has a lot to do with the team’s success.
Perry is off to a hot start this season, scoring nine goals in 11 games – one of which was a game-winner – and unless injury derails this train, he may be on his way to another Richard Trophy.
On the other side of the ice is Seguin, a player who came to the Stars in a trade from Boston prior to the 2013-14 season after the Bruins drafted him second overall in 2010. The natural centre, who is playing right wing on the Stars’ first line, enjoyed an incredible campaign last season notching 37 goals and 84 points, all career highs.
The addition of Seguin to a Dallas team that already included Benn helped them make their first playoff appearance since 2007-08 last season. In their first round match-up against the Ducks the Stars used a hard-hitting attack to test Anaheim more than most expected. The Ducks would eventually win the series four games to two, but they looked banged up entering their second round series with the Kings.
Seguin has continued where he left off last season, tied for the league lead in points with 15 and has a point in every game since going pointless in the first two games of the year. His consistency has been a major reason for the Stars winning record and he looks like he’s ready to show everyone that last season was just the beginning of his bright future in Dallas.
Whose going to have the better night? The league’s leading goal scorer Perry? Or the league’s top point getter Seguin?
My prediction: Perry scores once and the Ducks win the game, but Seguin continues his point streak with a pair of assists. Seguin technically wins the points match-up, but Perry wins the battle because the Ducks walk away victorious.
Happy Halloween everyone, enjoy the trick or treating.
