Hasek’s anthem

Seeing the article in the July 1 issue about Dominik Hasek’s retirement took me back to one of the most rewarding hockey moments I have had.

By total coincidence I found myself in Buffalo the night of their first home game after the 1998 Olympic break. Hasek had been on the Czech Republic’s gold medal-winning team. The fact the visiting team was the rival Leafs added to the spirit.

Walking the two blocks from the parking lot to HSBC Arena I saw no fewer than a dozen tour busses with Canadian plates.

As is normal, the US and Canadian anthems were played. But after that, Dominik was made welcome and the Czech Republic’s anthem was also played.

As you can only imagine, the 17,000 fans in the building went totally nuts.

This sort of thing is known as a life experience.

Oh yeah: Sabres 5, Leafs 3.
