The star New York Rangers netminder was furious that the refs didn’t stop play after he was accidentally clobbered by his own defenseman, Ryan McDonagh. So Lundqvist took matters into his own hands. It wasn’t pretty.
New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist is once again have a sublime year, but last night was an exception. During the second period of an eventual 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh, Lundqvist was accidentally walloped by teammate and star defenseman Ryan McDonagh. The netminder’s stick went into the corner and though Lundqvist scrambled back to his crease, he probably could have used a whistle to get himself together after the collision.
When the referees didn’t give him that break, Lundqvist took matters into his own hands, quite literally:
That’s some fire, right there. Lundqvist would give up three goals late in the period and leave the game. Antti Raanta took over for the third while ‘Hank’ dealt with neck spasms in the dressing room.
And just to add more fuel to this Metro Division rivalry, Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury called Lundqvist’s reaction “baby stuff” after the game.
