Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf used the new hybrid icing rule to spring sniper Phil Kessel for a very clever goal as the Leafs wiped out the Avalanche in Colorado.
This goal would have been impossible until this season. Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf used the new hybrid icing rule to spring sniper Phil Kessel by banking a rink-wide pass off the boards, allowing Kessel to win a foot race for the puck and then bury it behind Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov.
The Leafs would go on to win 5-2 in Colorado and are red-hot right now, racking up their sixth straight victory. Varlamov was pulled from the Avs net early in the second period.
